  1. The University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in the world The University of Coimbra, founded in 1290, is the first university in Portugal and one of the oldest universities in the world. It was when King Dinis signed the "Scientiae Thesaurus Mirabilis" that the University was created. It began to function in Lisbon, but in 1308 it was transferred to Coimbra, alternating between the two cities until 1537, when it was definitively established in the city on the Mondego River, in Coimbra. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was also the only Portuguese-speaking University in the world. It was built on the site of a former palace, and its 16th century campus has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. Celebrating its 730ᵉ anniversary this year, this university has a unique heritage at the Centre of European and world scientific culture.

  2. A university with resounding numbers The University of Coimbra is in the World University Ranking. Indeed, it ranks 601st out of 800 in the 2020 World University Ranking. It is 62nd in the ranking of universities with the greatest impact in 2020 and is 101st out of 125 in the 2018 European Teaching Ranking. Coimbra has more than 26,000 students within its walls, including 5,275 foreign students and more than 1123 international students. Indeed, it is worth noting the system implemented to welcome international students within the walls of the university establishment. A university that opens its doors to the greatest number of people Foreign students have the opportunity to continue their studies thanks to the Erasmus programme set up at the University of Coimbra. Erasmus is an exchange programme that allows international students and even teachers to study or teach at another university for a semester or even an academic year.

  3. Thanks to the implementation of this system, students come to Portugal in large numbers to study. Therefore, if foreign students plan to come to Coimbra in the future months for their studies or other purposes, such as visiting Lisbon and/or discovering Portuguese culture, it is now possible to obtain a Portugal visa for their future trips. It is very easy to apply for a Portugal visa online and it will be much faster for people to get it as soon as possible in the following months.
