  3. Housemanship: • Continuation of undergraduate training • Period of clinical apprenticeship • Provisionally registered with the Singapore Medical Council • Builds on knowledge, skills and attitudes developed during undergraduate medical course Joint Committee for HO Training

Objectives of Housemanship Training • Competence in clinical diagnosis • effective history taking • thorough clinical examination • selection & interpretation of common diagnostic tests • Good clinical judgement in assessment and management of patients with broad range of common and important conditions • Competence in management of acute medical and surgical emergencies Joint Committee for HO Training

  5. Objectives of Housemanship Training • Ability to perform common procedures properly • Ability to keep accurate medical records - including the use of computers • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, their relatives and members of the medical team Joint Committee for HO Training

  8. Housemanship Postings • 3 four-month postings • Medicine is a compulsory posting • 5 combinations of specialty postings approved by the Singapore Medical Council Joint Committee for HO Training

Pre-Employment Administrative Requirements • Application for Employment • Application for Postings • Registration with Singapore Medical Council • Purchase insurance cover with SMA* • Pre-employment Medical Examination • Employment Pass (for foreigners) • House Officer Orientation Program *NHG HOs only. NHG will reimburse the HOs based on their choice of insurer. SingHealth HOs will have Medical Indemnity purchased by SingHealth Joint Committee for HO Training

Application for Employment • Common Application Form • Documents to be attached with application: • Transcript of results of year 1-4 Medical Studies • Copy of Final MBBS results* • ‘O’ and ‘A’ level (or equivalent) results • Birth certificate and/or Citizenship • Copy of NRIC • Copy of I/C (for Malaysians) and/or Passport (all foreigners) • Certificate of Service from SAF • Photo (pasted on Application Form) (*Submit Final MBBS results within 1 week of release) Joint Committee for HO Training

Registration with Singapore Medical Council • SMC Registration Form duly completed • Documents to be attached with application: • Transcript of results of year 1-4 Medical Studies • Copy of Final MBBS results • ‘O’ and ‘A’ level (or equivalent) results • Birth certificate and/or Citizenship • Copy of NRIC • Copy of I/C (for Malaysians) and/or Passport (all foreigners) • Certificate of Service from SAF • $125 fee (cheque payable to the “Singapore Medical Council”) Joint Committee for HO Training

  18. Insurance and Pre-employment Medical Examination • Purchase insurance cover from SMA • Only for NHG HOs (NHG will reimburse the HOs based on the HO’s choice of insurer) • SingHealth HOs will have cover purchased by SingHealth • Level 2, Medical Alumni Building, College Road • $200 • Pre-employment Medical Examination • Arrange venue, date and time with employer Joint Committee for HO Training

Employment Pass (for non-Singaporeans) • Employment Pass Application Form duly completed in black ink - 1 copy • Documents to be attached with application: • Transcript of results of year 1-4 Medical Studies • Copy of Final MBBS results • ‘O’ and ‘A’ level (or equivalent) results • 2 recent photographs taken within last 3 months • Registration with Singapore Medical Council • Marriage certificate & spouse’s educational certificates if applicable • Applications for Dependant’s Passes if applicable Joint Committee for HO Training

  25. Assessment of HO Training • Logbook • Issued at the beginning of HO training • Issued by Dean’s Office, Medicine, NUS • Records training experience • Assessment Report • Head of Department or nominee • At the end of each posting Joint Committee for HO Training

Assessment of HO Training (1) - Logbook • Records training experience • Emergency/urgent cases managed under supervision • Procedures - core skills and additional practical skills • Structured education programs and CMEs • Research projects • Presentations &/or publications • Identify and address possible areas of deficiencies Joint Committee for HO Training

Assessment of HO Training (2) - HO Assessment Report • Submitted by Head of Dept/Supervisor to Associate Dean of hospital at the end of each posting* • Associate Dean submit reviewed reports to Dean, Faculty of Medicine within one month of end of posting* • Dean, Faculty of Medicine evaluates doctor’s performance and adequacy of training • Dean, Faculty of Medicine makes recommendations to Singapore Medical Council on the doctor’s suitability for Full Registration * Third posting assessment submitted to Dean’s Office one month before end of posting Joint Committee for HO Training
