  1. CLOTHING PLAN Camouflage is highly used throughout the rap and hip-hop industry. Artists use it as a symbol and Camo and military-influenced clothes played a huge part in hip-hop style 20 years ago. The use of a plain black t-shirt allows more attention to be drawn to the oversized jacket and other clothing and accessories. The use of black also helps to allow the other colours to balance and therefore not clash together. This heavy & thick oversized denim shirt is normally worn by a male. Yet instead my female model will wear it in order to subvert against the male gaze theory. My model will therefore also be showing that females in the rap industry are able to dress however they want and aren't scrutinized for doing so. Camouflage and other patterned baggy trousers was consumed by most female rap legends including Lil Kim and Lisa Left Eye. These allowed female rap artists to balance and have more equality amongst male rappers as they weren't looked at as sexual objects. Most 90’s R&B artists also wore these in music videos as well as the red carpet! Aaliyah is a great example of this. This is an essential symbol of the rap empire. The use of gold earrings also help to give a sassy and feminine look back to the front cover image. As most of the clothing is usually worn by males the use of accessories and large use of makeup help to remind the audience of the specific look we are going for, of women in hip-hop/rap/r&b during the late 90’s. These combats boots were highly worn during the late 80’s and 90’s. They were more popular than Jordan's alongside other nikey trainers and timberlands. They were also recognised to be worn a lot by Bone Thugs N Harmony who are known as rap and hip-hop legends and are easily linked to the boots.

  2. Not only during the 90’s era did females wear baggy trousers but they also wore tight jeans which conforms to the male gaze theory. These converses were sometimes worn by rap gangs such as NWA. The use of a plain black t-shirt allows more attention to be drawn to the oversized jacket and other clothing and accessories. The use of black also helps to allow the other colours to balance and therefore not clash together.

  3. Black rain jackets are highly consumed by today’s rap and hip/hop industry, especially in the UK. It’s therefore easily identifiable what genre my music magazine is. The high use of black jeans reminds the audience that not only can the artist be ‘classy’ but she can also ‘dominate’ a whole year through her music. Men are usually associated with baggy jeans and loose clothing, where in this case it shows women could do both and therefore subverts from the male gaze theory. Cap’s were often recognised with baseball which was significantly popular in the 90’s.
