  2. As the first in your family to go to college, it may feel as if the world is stacked against you. At RightC3, we want you to know that the coaches are in your corner. Here’s some of our best tips:

Consider Going Directly to a 4-year College, Full-Time Research indicates that the traditional path of attending a four-year college soon after graduation is still the path that leads to the most successful graduation outcomes. The research also shows that this is especially relevant for first-generation students, as they are statistically less likely to graduate and more likely to postpone or stall their college studies.

  4. Be Academically Prepared Many first-year, first-generation students may not feel ready for the rigors of college classes. Taking advanced courses during your years in high school, even if not required, can help you be ready for what is to come. During your spare time, get into the habit of reading as much as you can. College classes often have a lot of material you will need to read on your own outside of class.

Find Support Many students may feel overwhelmed once they get on campus. Check out this video of a first-generation college student discussing her experience and her recommendations for enhancing resources for first-generation college students. Fortunately, many colleges have answered the call for additional resources. This website has a great college search detailing the resources available at each school. Outside of the college itself, you can also find support by connecting with the coaches on our team that are first-generation college graduates!

  6. Seek Out Mentors and Allies Being outgoing is basically a requisite for being a first-generation college student. No one will be able to answer your questions if you don’t ask. In college, you should make an effort to get to know your professors, and make good use of your academic advisor. Other great places to find people to answer your questions are your residential assistant, the financial aid office, the multicultural center, the career center, and the learning services center.
