  2. The Academic Program • Year-long, thematically integrated learning communities • Mandatory for all freshmen taking day classes • 90 person student cohorts • Faculty teams of 10 • All courses meet graduation or general education requirements

  3. Learning Community Design • All students complete three courses in science, humanities, and/or social science • All students take three quarters of freshman seminar • All students take Information Literacy and Communication courses • Almost all students take some level(s) of composition courses

  7. Freshman Seminar • Spring: Connecting the pieces • Service and civic learning experiences • Revising learning plans • Reflecting on the first year of college • Completing the electronic portfolio • Advising • Exuviae! A celebration of student work

  8. Advising • The freshman program faculty & staff serve as advisors for all incoming freshmen • Quarterly group advising • Individual advising • Early Alert • Tracking students before they get in trouble • This year: intrusive advising for non-EOP freshman exception admits

Making Social Connections • CSUEB’s Freshman Year Experience • Book connection • Freshman Convocation • Social activities (collaborating with Student Life, Athletics, ASI, Student Clubs & Orgs) • Movies at the Agora • Halloween party • Kite flying • Massage & Yoga (mid-term & finals weeks) • Flag Football, & etc.

  10. Markers of Success • 84% retention from first to second year • 1% of freshmen academically disqualified at year’s end (CSU system average 10%) • 65% complete baccalaureate composition course (~ 55% need developmental comp) in first year
