  2. EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN Emergency Response Plan (ERP) • In order to provide a safe and secure environment personnel must plan for the management of emergency events that cannot be predicted or prevented.

  3. Homeland Security Requirement • All schools nationwide are now required to develop their emergency plans using a comprehensive, uniform template. The goal is to create a unified system of command, establish a common vocabulary and a purposeful plan to implement in case of emergency.

  4. Critical Incident Planning and Mapping System(Play CD of mapping system design)

  5. Will be used to manage all emergencies that occur within SUSD because it provides a means to coordinate everyone towards the common goals of: -Stabilizing the incident. -Protecting life, property, and the environment. The Incident Command System (ICS)

  6. ICS is based on the premise that every crisis has certain major elements requiring clear lines of command and control. An overview of the plan will be explained to students and to parents. Drills will be conducted periodically to test the effectiveness of the plan.

  7. The Laguna Plan • An Emergency Response Committee has been created consisting of: -Local law enforcement. -Fire/EMS, emergency management. -Site personnel • Will establish, maintain and continuously update the plan.

  9. Your Eyes and Ears… … are needed. We are all responsible for the safety of this campus. Vigilance and reporting suspicious activity is essential.

  10. General Security Measures Always sign in the office and wear a visitors badge. Stop anyone you see who is not wearing a visitors badge or district ID and ask them to go to the office. Watch them go! Inform the office of any operational security weaknesses, such as damaged/broken fences or doors or faulty locks. Maintain constant awareness of people, activities, and items around you.

Look for Irregular or Suspicious Behaviors Such as People who: • Are not where they are supposed to be (restricted areas). • Look lost and/or wandering around campus. • Appear to be conducting surveillance (using video cameras, taking photos, etc). • Cause disruptions or intentionally distracting behavior. • Show an unusual interest in employees or students. • Abandon an item and leave the area quickly. • Openly possess a weapon and/or prohibited or dangerous item. • Use a vehicle in a suspicious way (illegally parked, erratic driving, following, etc).

  12. Look for items or devices that: • Were abandoned by someone and left in the open. • Were abandoned and hidden. • Appear to be suspicious or dangerous, such as a canister, tank, metal box, bottle, etc. • Appear to be emitting a mist, gas, vapor or odor. • Have an attached message. • Seem to have seepage or leakage of suspicious substance. • Are connected to wires, timers, tanks, or bottles. • Appear to be the source of a foreign substance that is causing people to cough, have trouble breathing, feel nausea, lose consciousness, or exhibit any other medical condition.

  13. Your Role is Critical You are part of the emergency team IF you know what to do and how to do it. We need you to be a leader – guide others who may not know what to do.

  14. On Site and Off-Site Procedures • There are different procedures for emergencies that might occur on campus that require us to evacuate buildings or relocate off campus. • On campus emergency will involve two procedures: • - Evacuate the buildings but remain on campus • - Lock down the campus • Off campus emergency procedures will require everyone to move off campus to a safer place.

  15. In every room on campus you will find emergency procedures posted next to the emergency evacuation map. Take the time to read one of these the next time you are on campus. You need to know what to do and where to go in case of an emergency! If you forget – the directions are there for you. Classroom Emergency Response Guide

Fire Response • The On-Site Evacuation is typically used in response to a fire or other similar emergency that requires all students, staff and visitors to exit all buildings but remain on the campus. • If you are in a classroom you will need to follow the evacuation route posted in that classroom. Do not go looking for your child! • If you are walking up to the school or approaching the office you will need to return to your car. Do not continue on to your child’s classroom! (Fire drills typically last 5 minutes) • If you are approaching the school during an on-site evacuation then continue driving and wait until notification is sent to you by the emergency phone system. DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL! • Be flexible. Be prepared to take an alternate route if normal route is too dangerous. Stay off your cell phones!

  17. Lock Down • If you are in a classroom you will remain in the classroom. Follow the teachers directions. • If you are in a public room (copy room, PTO office, etc ) you will need to turn off the lights, keep the door closed and move away from doors and windows. Wait for further instructions! • If you are walking up to the school or approaching the office you will need to return to your car. We will not let you in classrooms or the office once the doors are locked. For your safety-leave! • If you are approaching the school during a real lock down then continue driving and wait until notification is sent to you by the emergency phone system.. DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL! • Be flexible. Be patient. Be respectful. Safety comes first and we need to focus all our attention on handling the emergency!

  18. OFF-SITE EVACUATION RELOCATION If you are on campus… • Follow the explicit directions given to you by staff or emergency personnel. • Do not attempt to return to your car or find your child. • Stay off your cell phone. • Be flexible. Be calm. Be ready to assist if called upon.

  19. Get on the district website at www.susd.org and wait for updates. Open your email and look for updates sent by the district and/or PTO. Keep your phone lines open (office, cell and home) so you may receive information when it comes. Turn on your radio and TV for emergency broadcasts. Two recommended radio stations are KTAR (92.3FM) or KFYI (550 AM) or KJZZ (91.5FM) What do you do if you hear about an emergency?

  21. You will go to the parent staging area identified to you through the emergency contact system. You must present ID to staff and/or emergency personnel. You will be asked to complete a student request form. You will then be directed where to go to retrieve your child. Be patient and respectful! It will take time to ensure children are being accounted for and released in a systematic way. How do I get my child?
