What is CLUB UMB? • NEW YOUTH LEADERSHIP AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM sponsored by the UMB Outreach Council in partnership with local schools: • George Washington Elementary School for 4th and 5th grade children on Mondays from 3-5 pm • Diggs-Johnson Middle School for 7th and 8th grade children on Thursdays from 3-5 pm • CLUB UMB Schedule for 2009-2010 school year (specific dates follow): • Fall Semester: Late September through mid-December 2009; and • Spring Semester: February through April 2010 • The children who enroll in CLUB UMB are expected to serve as student leaders & community ambassadors. CLUB UMB meets weekly at each school supported by UMB volunteer mentors and coordinators. • UMB volunteers serve as mentors for: (1) college & career awareness activities and/ or (2) science & health activities. Small group coordinators guide mentors in activities that have been arranged by the UMB Outreach Council. • Family engagement activities are supported monthly by CLUB UMB. UMB volunteers are needed to support family engagement and other one-time activities at each school.

Where are our Partner Schools? • George Washington Elementary School 800 Scott Street, Baltimore MD 21230 410-396-1445 Contact: Marc LaVeau, Community School Coordinator • Directions: From campus, take W. Lombard Street towards MLK Blvd. Turn left onto Scott Street . End at 800 Scott Street. • Diggs Johnson Middle School 1300 Herkimer Street, Baltimore MD 21223 410-396-1572 Contact: Isaac Jackson, School-Based Liaison • Directions: From campus, take W. Lombard Street towards MLK Blvd. Turn left onto S. Carey Street . End at 1300 Herkimer Street. Both schools are within a mile of the UMB campus.

  4. Background Checks • A background check, including fingerprinting, is required for volunteers by Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS). • Important Requirements for CLUB UMB volunteers: • Attend the background check at the SMC Campus Center, Room # 311 from 10 am - 2 pm on Monday, October 12th or Thursday, October 15th. It will take about 15 minutes. • Bring your drivers’ license to the background check! • Let us know which date you select for the background check. • If you’re not able to attend on 10/12 or 10/15, you need to report to BCPSS Headquarters, 200 E North Ave (Room # 317) for the background check.

How will I know what to do as a CLUB UMB volunteer? • Guidance for Volunteers: Club UMB coordinators will guide volunteer mentors in College & Career activities and Science & Health activities on-site at the local school. No other training is needed. • Two Types of Mentoring Activities: • College & Career: Includes such activities as on-line college & career scavenger hunts, resume building, financial literacy skills, setting goals and making choices, a high school & college fair, and tours of the campus. Bewhatiwanttobe.com is helpful. • Science & Health: Includes such activities as interactive and fun science demos and experiments (which also will build math skills) and science-related tours. • Timing: “College & Career” and “Science & Health” activities are offered on alternate weeks.

  6. What is the schedule for volunteers? Days Volunteers are needed: • Volunteers available on Mondays from 3-5 pm will serve as mentors at George Washington Elementary School (GWES). • Volunteers available on Thursdays from 3-5 pm will serve as mentors at Diggs-Johnson Middle School (DJMS) Mentoring Activities for Volunteers: • If you can volunteer every week, you will be able to help mentor children in both College & Career and Science & Health activities. • If you can volunteer only every other week, you will need to choose to serve as a mentor in either College & Career activities or Science & Health activities. • All mentors will assist in tutoring & guidance in homework assignments and in team building exercises.

  8. What are the Next Steps? • Volunteer Form: Based on your availability, select the dates when you can serve as a CLUB UMB volunteer. Complete the Volunteer Form (or modify a copy of the form you submitted, if you want to make any change). Before leaving, go to the registration table to leave the form, select the date for the background check, and get a copy of the schedule. • E-mail from CLUB UMB: Anyone who has submitted a volunteer form, should watch for an e-mail from CLUB UMB with: • The dates and location where you will serve as a mentor; and • Reminder about the background check. What will I do on the First Day as a Volunteer for CLUB UMB? • Review the email from CLUB UMB with all the needed details (be sure to pre-plan for a ride if you need one) or the information you are provided as you leave today • Report to the principal’s office at 3 pm at the assigned school to meet the CLUB UMB Coordinator. • Register in the CLUB UMB binder (in the principal’s office) and complete the Federal Work-Study time sheet (if applicable) • Discuss the day’s activities & room location with the Coordinator. • Leave at 5 pm with a lighter step, since you made a difference today!
