Recently,researcherscouldreproduceonly8outof50cancerresearchpapersinthelongdurationof5years. Aftercancerbiology,asarecentstudyhasshown,thereproducibilitycrisishasspreadtosocialsciences. Sincetwoofthemostprestigiousjournalsinthescientikccommunityhadpublishedthesearticles,theseresults cameintonotice.BrianNosekoftheUniversityofVirginiainCharlottesvillesaysthatthesetypesofhigh-prokle kndingscanreceivesignikcantmediaattention.However,theattentionisnotalwayspositive;someofitmaybe negative aswell. Usingthestudyofstressandperformanceduringexamsasanexample,Nosekfeelsthatthesestudiesstillyield importantinformation.However,hedidadmitthatsomekndingsinthestudycouldnotbereplicated.Hesaysthat thiscouldbeduetosomeminorchange,likethedifferencesinthesamplesizesusedintheexperiments.Inthat case,Noseksays,“studiesthatobtainasignikcantresultarelikelytobeexaggerationsoftheactualeffectsize.” ReproducibilityinCrisis:TrueorFalse? Toaddressthis,theacademiccommunityconductedseveralreproducibilitystudiesovertheyears.Oneexampleis the Reproducibility Project: Cancer Biology (RP:CB) that began in 2013. This project set out to test the reproducibilityof50signikcantstudiesincancerbiology.Todate,theresultsfor10replicationstudieshavebeen published oneLife. FutureofScientikcReproducibility Theimplicationsofthereproducibilitycrisisarewide-ranginginsocialsciencesandacademiaasawhole.Two yearsago,thekeldofpsychologymadeheadlineswhentwoclassicstudiesfailedreproducibilitytests.According to John Ioannidis of Stanford University, more such studies could improve the accuracy of the knowledge produced.Ioannidisandmanyothersseetheattentionthatreproducibilitycrisisreceivedasbenekcialforthe scientikcandacademiccommunities.Moresuchresearchprojects,liketheReproducibilityProjectandthestudy inNature’sHumanBehavior,willbringoutthereproducibilitycrisisinacademia,therebyeliminatingit.
