Everyone wishes to live in beautiful homes, apartments and flats. Everyone wishes that people compliment their homes when they visit, whether it is a special occasion or just a casual meet. They want their homes to stand out and reflect their nature, character, soul. But then there is time, time which washes away all beauty. It is like aging, as one can grow old, so can the homes one lives in. Cracked walls can torment the homely beauty, as do wrinkles for us. It then becomes necessary to repair this wear and tear of the home and bring it back to life. This is where various grouting methods play their part.
Before I get to grouting, it is important to mention, that grouting is not just used to repair homes. It is a technique used to repair a variety of things starting from the ground and soil to infrastructure like bridges, homes, tunnels, etc. It is a set of complex activities that makes it easier to repair conditions affected from natural hazards such as earthquake, landslides. It seems too good to be true; that such a technique exists that can be used on such a diverse set of environment. Grouting methods are in-fact evolved to be used under various environmental conditions.
It is high time I start revealing what grouting really is. Grouting comes from the word grout. What is grout you ask? Grout is essentially a fluid form of concrete designed to fill gaps. It is applied in construction to connect sections of pre-cast concrete, fill voids holes and cracks, and seal joints such as those between tiles. Grout is usually a compound mix of water, cement, sand, often colour tint and fine gravel. Unlike other structural compounds such as plaster or joint compound, properly mixed and applied grout can act as a waterproof seal. Grout is thin and thus can readily fill up gaps unlike others; hence the popularity of grouting methods.
The basic process of grouting involves holes being drilled in the structure along the cracks and hollow spots to be filled. The whole spacing depends on the area to be repaired and site conditions. Subsequently PVC nozzles are fixed into the holes with rich cement mortar, and the cracks are all cut open into a V shaped groove, cleaned and sealed with the mortar. All the grout holes are subsequently required to be sluiced with water using the same equipment a day before grouting. Grouting should be prepared of that quantity such that it can be used immediately in the next 15 minutes. This is the basic working of grouting methods. There are various types of grouting, all used for its environment and purpose. Permeation grouting is to fill up rock pores and fractures in the soil. Compaction grouting is designed to displace the soil where it is injected without mixing with the soil. Hydro Fracture grouting is fracturing of the rock to make compact or stiffen the ground, and fill up inaccessible voids. Jet grouting uses high water pressure to physically disrupt the ground to modify it and improve it further. These are just a few of the grouting methods.
