  1. Bathing Safety for Alzheimer’s Patients Seniors who are facing the effects of dementia can find it difficult to comprehend the logistics of bathing. When the later stages of dementia are reached, bathing frequencies, its steps, and other related matters become complex, confusing and often uncomfortable. It’s important to encourage the pleasantness of bathing and its association to cleanliness and renewal as many Alzheimer’s patients can consider bathing to be an unpleasant burden. One main reason is that the fear of falling becomes imminent, not to mention the vulnerability associated with being undressed. Many patients also do not like the loud sounds of running water, feel cold in the bathroom, and are weary of the sensation of water against their skin. These worries and unpleasant dispositions can cause an elderly patient to neglect their hygiene, leading to a host of health issues. Comfort and Ease Keeping the bathroom, a simple and functional place is a good start to keeping a person with dementia calm. In terms of comfort, safety bath tubs can offer: A tub that runs water quietly, quickly and efficiently (4 mins to fill the tub) A door that allows ease of access into the tub Three grab bars to hold onto for safety Warm soothing air jets A heated seat and back Slip resistant textured floors Easy to reach drain controls and a fail-safe chain The aromatherapy and chromatherapy options are added benefits if the patient is feeling vulnerable and scared. Stimulating senses in a calm manner may reduce negative feelings associated with bathing. The silicone pillow featured with the tub allows the head and neck to be supported. Other Useful Features The handheld shower wand is perfect for an Alzheimer’spatient’s caregiver who is assisting the bath. Safety bath’s Custom Safety Seat / Transfer Bench could be a great option to explore if the person does not want to sit directly on the floor of the tub or needs a place to sit while exiting the tub. This is also available as a conversion piece to add to your existing bathtub. It’s important to note that those who have an early onset of dementia symptoms are eligible for a T2201 Disability Tax Credit Certificate that can be put toward a Safety Bath Tub.
