Class of 1963 40th Reunion 19th September, 2003 - SITREP - • Members of the Class who took the oath as “Midshipman, U.S. Navy” on 7 July 1959……..................….1,191 • Lingering traditions when we entered the Academy: • A real Plebe Year • A smokestack that could be painted (“ ’63 sez….”) • Marching to Protestant Chapel Service in Full Dress uniforms • No Public Display of Affection • Heavy raincoats • Service Dress Khaki • Academic sections marching to class • An all male Brigade • No cars • A (consistently) winning football team

Class of 1963 40th Reunion 19th September, 2003 - SITREP - • While we were at USNA: • The administrations of Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy • The first game in the new Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium • The USSR put the first man (Major Yuri Gagarin) in earth orbit • The Bay of Pigs (Cuba) invasion • The first U.S. Astronaut (CDR Alan Shepard) entered space (116.5 miles up) • An American U-2 (Francis Gary Powers) was shot down over the Soviet Union • Joe Bellino was named Navy’s first winner of the Heisman Trophy • The Berlin Wall was erected by East Germany • The first American (LT. COL. John Glenn) orbited the earth • The Cuban Missile Crisis • The USSR exploded the largest (50 megaton Hydrogen) bomb in world history • Bancroft Hall expanded to 7th and 8th wings
