  2. Research says… • Singhal (1997) discussed the potential benefits of the Internet and how it can be used in the second or foreign language classroom. She indicates that Internet is not only a new tool of communication, but also a teaching and learning tool. Singhal, Meena. (1997). The Internet and Foreign Language Education: Benefits and Challenges. The Internet TESL Journal, Vol. 3, No. 6. Retrieved February 3, 2008 from http://iteslj.org/Articles/Singhal-Internet.html.

  3. 1997- my first web page Learning Chinese Online • Created for collecting web resources for teaching Chinese • At first, everything was manual • Now it is dynamic – pages are created automatically by a program. Once the database is updated, the pages are updated automatically • Current URL: http://learningchineseonline.net

  4. Five types of web pages/links • Resources: Teaching and learning resources • Courses: Course pages – an example • Textbook based: – e-textbookexample and textbook supporting page • Learning tools: tools for learning page • Virtual classroom and office: for students and for myself – easy access to web pages and programs

  5. Three models • Complete online For local or long distance (CHIN101) • Hybrid/blended Classroom teaching and online (CHIN360 -e-textbook, online review session- wiziq , online exercises-quia, group translation-writeboard) • Web-supported Classroom teaching supported by online materials (all other courses – course page, online exercises, multimedia programs and resources)

  6. Why using web pages? • Why do I use them - CCN • Curiosity – interested to know if Internet really helps teaching and learning • Convenience – anytime and anywhere, easy to edit, update • Normalization – indispensable tool for teaching and learning

  7. Benefits and problems • Easy access to teaching materials – anytime and anywhere • Convenience in teaching – it is no longer pen and paper and chalk and blackboard, but keyboard and screen. • Strengthening interaction with students – email, discussion, virtual classroom

  8. Benefits and problems • Much more time spent than pen and paper teaching • There are always new things to learn • Ephemeral nature of the Internet data

  9. FUA • FUA - the most frequently used applications (not FQA) • Web developing – Word, Frontpage or Dreamwaver, etc. • Uploading and downloading – FTP

  10. Suggestions for novice people • Create a site for yourself, e.g. for your course • Make some web pages for this course • Upload and upgrade them • Maintain this course web site • Web supporting course or blended/hybrid course is suggested

  11. Future • CALL will be normalized when computers are treated as always secondary to learning itself, when the needs of learners will be carefully analyzed first of all, and then the computer used to serve those needs.” Bax, S. (2003). CALL — past, present and future. System, Vol. 31. pp.13–28.
