Did you know that dehydration is actually one of the most common illnesses you can get on a ship? It’s not the voyage itself that’s making you sick however, but the rapid changes in environment and the activities you engage in over the duration of your trip.   2. This can happen rather easily. During summers in the San Juans, the temperatures on land can run higher than when you’re cruising on the water. Increased heat can cause your body to sweat more, rapidly depleting your reserves of electrolytes and moisture. It’s also entirely possible to get dehydrated even during the colder months because the lower temperature diminishes the body’s thirst response by up to 40 percent. While you may not feel like drinking some fluids, your body could be in dire need of a refreshing drink. Falling ill during a cruise can really put a damper on all your awesome vacation plans. Take note of these tips so you can have a wonderful time seeing the majestic San Juan Archipelago. Drink Water or Sports Drinks This really couldn’t be stressed enough for people going on a sailing adventure. Although the amount of water needed for consumption will differ for each person, a good rule of thumb to follow is to drink at least 2 liters of water a day. If you’re going on land to hike or to take part in any other physically taxing activity, drink a few more liters of water or at least get in the habit of downing sports drinks. Take It Easy on the Booze Enjoying the breathtaking scenery while knocking back a glass of sweet red wine or a flute of chilled champagne is something you should definitely do on a cruise. However, make sure to keep your alcohol intake in check. Excessive alcohol consumption only speeds up the rate of dehydration. If you expect that you and your group will be drinking heavily, have everyone drink a glass of water in between rounds. Limit Your Time Under the Sun Sunlight is great for getting a tan and taking photos, but don’t bask in it any longer than you need to. As much as possible, you’ll want to avoid exposing yourself to direct sunlight, especially in the hours from noon to 2 p.m. This is when the sun is at its highest point, and its strongest and most harmful as well. If you absolutely must get on deck during these hours, remember to put on protective apparel that is weather appropriate, and some sunscreen. 2 | P a g e
