  2. The word SEO used to get me on edge, it stands for Search Engine Optimization right? What is it and how can it help your business – I’m here to shed some light for you! After being in marketing for 10 years I was finding that over time more of my marketing plans were focused around digital marketing and in particular SEO, so I did what every marketer should do and completed a Diploma of Digital Marketing, and do you know what? It’s not actually as scary as it sounds. There are lots of little things you can be doing as a business owner to help with your SEO and move your website up those Google ranks and onto page one.

  3. Pick the most obvious domain name that explains your business Think about the most basic word someone would search that is relevant to your business and build a domain name around that. Your domain name (www.yourwebsite.com.au) is one of the most important ticks on Google’s checklist for when someone makes a search. The best domain names are the ones that are related to the product or service you provide.Thismakes it easier for Google to categories your website and present to it to a relevant search query. If you don’t have big budgets to invest in growing an obscure brand name, then often, the most simple, direct website names are the most effective.

  4. Design a mobile responsive website I don’t need to tell you that the use of mobile devices is growing at an astounding rate and is quickly becoming the primary tool of searching the Internet. One of Google’s big ticket items on the checklist is that you’re website is responsive to both tablets and mobiles, Google will priorities and provide higher ranks in the search results for responsive websites. A great website I use to check my clients designs through the web development process is www.quirktools.com/screenflyThe number of devices is ever increasing and the varying dimensions make it mandatory for the websites to be responsive for the best user experience& help in search results.

  5. Do your own keyword research The foundation of any good SEO campaign is choosing the right keywords. These are the words that people search that will get them to your website. Intuition is a good place to start….what would you search that your business could come up in? After you have your list, a great way to test this list is to login to your Google adwords account > Go to Tools > Click on the keyword planner and have a play around. This is not 100% accurate but will give you a great insight and help in shaping your website to get better results in search.

  6. Use your keywords for on-page optimsation So once we have our keywords list, we can then integrate them into our website through the content, as well as backend tagging. The good news is that if you have a Word press website then there is a simple plug-in called Yoast that will make this process super easy and give you the green light once you’ve ticked the Google boxes – it provides options to add meta tags, header tags, optimized content, open graph tags as well as generating a sitemap and robots.txt file for Google.

  7. Add your business to local online directories The second part to Googles checklist is the off-page optimization, also known as building backlinks. This looks at how many other websites are linking to yours, and as long as they are high quality websites this goes a long way in improving your authority with Google and pushing your business to the top of the search results. A really simple way to get started is to simply add your business to local directory websites, a few that I use are Sensis, Start Local, Only Local & Melbourne e-City Guide just to name a few. This can also be very in depth in analyzing an identifying the best backlink building for your website, engaging with an agency that specializes in SEO will take this step to the next level and help build your ranking with Google.
