  1. What Is Lipoma: Know Its Causes, Symptoms And Treatment A Lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor made of fat tissue. They are typically soft to the touch, movable, and generally painless. Lipomas are the most common type of soft tissue tumour found in adults. They can occur anywhere in the body where there are fat cells, but they are most commonly found in the upper back, shoulders, arms, and thighs.

  2. Causes of Lipoma The exact cause of Lipoma is not well understood, but several factors may contribute to their development: Genetics: There is often a hereditary component, meaning Lipoma can run in families. Injuries: Sometimes, a Lipoma may develop after an injury to the area, although this is not a common cause. Age: Lipomas are most commonly found in middle-aged adults between 40 and 60 years old. Obesity: While not a direct cause, obesity can increase the risk of developing lipomas. Certain Medical Conditions: Conditions such as adiposis dolorosa, Gardner’s syndrome, and Madelung’s disease are associated with multiple lipomas.

  3. Symptoms of Lipoma Lipomas usually present with the following characteristics: Soft, Painless Lump: The lump is generally soft and doughy to the touch and can be moved slightly under the skin. Slow Growth: Lipomas grow slowly over months or even years. Size: They typically range in size from small (pea-sized) to larger than 2 inches in diameter. Location: Commonly found on the back, neck, shoulders, arms, and thighs, but can appear anywhere on the body.

  4. Treatment of Lipoma Most lipomas do not require treatment unless they are painful, growing, or causing other symptoms. Treatment options include: Observation: If the lipoma is not causing any discomfort, a doctor may recommend simply observing it over time. Surgical Removal: If the lipoma is painful, growing, or bothersome, surgical removal may be recommended. This is a minor procedure often done under local anesthesia. Liposuction: This procedure can be used to remove the fatty lump. It involves a needle and a large syringe to remove the fatty tissue. Steroid Injections: These can shrink the lipoma but usually do not completely eliminate it.

  5. When to See a Doctor You should see a doctor if: The lipoma becomes painful or tender. The lipoma shows signs of infection, such as redness or warmth. There are changes in the size or appearance of the lipoma. It starts to interfere with daily activities or causes discomfort.
