DHCP Explained | Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol | DHCP Server Configuration

In this presentation on DHCP explained, the information regarding the DHCP protocol is provided in a systematic order, beginning with what is dynamic host configuration protocol. Continuing with the DHCP server configuration and the allocation method in DHCP protocol, moving along with understanding some of the DHCP settings including lease, scope and address reservation for an IP address and also understanding the operation model of the DHCP protocol according to which the client receives its IP address and network configuration settings needed to access the internet. <br>

  4. What Is DHCP? DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a network protocol, which assigns IP addresses and configures network settings for devices to access internet services using the client-server architecture. IP IP 10.0.0.4 10.0.0.5 Access Internet DHCP Server

  5. Allocation Methods

  6. DHCP Allocation Methods TYPES Manual Allocation, also known as Static IP. Dynamic Allocation, uses client-server architecture.

  7. Manual Allocation • In this allocation process, the device is assigned the IP address by the user manually. • This is done by operating the system’s network configuration settings.

  8. Dynamic Allocation • In this process, the DHCP server reserves an IP address for the client system and assigns dynamically. • The assigned IP address is given on leasewhich is temporarily assigned. 10.0.0.5 Server

  9. DHCP Settings

  10. SCOPE 0 0 5 Start IP Address 10 Range End IP Address 10 0 0 50 10.0.0.6 10.0.0.7 10.0.0.8 10.0.0.9 10.0.0.26 10.0.0.27 10.0.0.28 10.0.0.29 10.0.0.46 10.0.0.47 10.0.0.48 10.0.0.49 Server

  11. LEASE Lease Expired • The IP address assigned is temporarily provided and gets expired after that. • The lease structure is designed to so that the server has few IP address in the scope. 10.0.0.5 IP Address Server

  12. ADDRESS RESERVATION Server

  13. Operation Model

  14. Operation Model How Do I connect to the internet? The DHCP client sends the message, DHCPDISCOVER port:68, port:67 src IP:0.0.0.0 dst:255.255.255.255 DHCP Client DHCP Server

  15. Operation Model Reserves an IP address for the client. Then DHCP server reserves an IP address, DHCPOFFER src IP:10.10.0.0 dst:255.255.255.255 DHCP Client DHCP Server

  16. Operation Model Confirms the reserved IP address. Next the client response to the offer, DHCPREQUEST src IP:0.0.0.0 dst:255.255.255.255 DHCP Client DHCP Server

  17. Operation Model Then DHCP server sends a DHCP pack, DHCPACK src IP:10.10.0.0 dst:255.255.255.255 DHCP Client DHCP Server
