  2. Getting To The Bottom Of Your Headache

  3. Headaches are classified as Primary or Secondary Everyone gets headaches. They’re so common that most of the time we just brush them off as the price of living in modern society. The majority of headaches are classified into the Migraine or Tension types. Common headaches are: • Tension headaches • Cluster headaches • Migraine • Migraine with aura

  4. Headaches that come on suddenly and feel like pain that you’ve never experienced in your whole life can signal a serious condition. It’s advised to seek emergency care if your headache is coupled with any of the following: • Trouble speaking, seeing or walking • Nausea and/or vomiting • Stiff neck • High fever • Fainting • Mental confusion If you are plagued with frequent headaches, The National Headache Foundation recommends keeping a detailed headache journal, recording the date, time, intensity, preceding symptoms, triggers, and how and when you got relief. You can help your family physician identify patterns so your doctor can better determine a path of treatment. Getting to the bottom of the cause of persistent headaches can be…a headache! This is why open and honest communication with your primary care physician is vital.

  5. What you can do to help: • You will be asked about family history, other illnesses, triggers and more. Write it all down before your first visit so you don’t forget anything. Bring your headache journal. • Learn everything you can about your headaches so you can ask relevant questions. • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Make sure that you are heard and that you understand exactly what your doctor is trying to tell you.

  6. Conclusion The most important thing to do is keep an open and trusting relationship with your primary care physicians. The success of your treatment plan depends on you feeling comfortable enough to ask questions and knowing that your doctor will always be there for you to ask more questions when you need to.

  7. OUR KEY PHILOSOPHY “ Take the time to listen. What I try and do with every patient I see, in the first few minutes, is just let them say what’s on their mind and there’s a lot of study that show we don’t do that enough in medicine. These are small things that you can’t pick up really from just filling out a form. That’s why it’s really important to spend time, talking and listening and building that relationship. ~ Dr. Arun Villivalam, M.D. ”
