The Seven Steps to Solving Equations. Algebra Karaoke. Step Number 1. Look at the Equation. 2(x + 5) + 3x = -5(x + 4) + 15x. Step Number 2. Apply the Distributive Property if it is in the equation. Original: 2(x + 5) + 3x = -5(x + 4) + 15x. 2x +10 + 3x = -5x – 20 + 15x. Step Number 3.

  1. The Seven Steps to Solving Equations Algebra Karaoke

  2. Step Number 1 • Look at the Equation 2(x + 5) + 3x = -5(x + 4) + 15x

  3. Step Number 2 • Apply the Distributive Property if it is in the equation. Original: 2(x + 5) + 3x = -5(x + 4) + 15x 2x +10 + 3x = -5x – 20 + 15x

  4. Step Number 3 • Combine Like Terms on EACH side of the equals sign Combining Like Terms is like collecting apples and oranges……only put terms together that look EXACTLY alike! Last Step: 2x + 10 + 3x = -5x – 20 + 15x Combining: 5x + 10 = 10x - 20

  5. Step Number 4 Add or Subtract (Goal: Get variables on one side of the equals sign and all whole numbers on the other side) 5x + 10 = 10x – 20 - 10 - 10 5x = 10x – 30 -10x -10x -5x = -30

  6. Step Number 5 • Multiply or Divide (Goal: To get the variable alone with only a 1 in front of the variable) -5x = -30 -5 -5 ( Anything divided by itself is 1)

  7. Step Number 6 • Find the solution to the equation -5/ -5 = 1x and -30/-5 = 6 so, My solution is : x = 6
