  3. 2- Why is it important to teach Culture ?In order to communicate efficiently and meaningfully, students should know about : • Role expectations that affect how people speak and behave. • the culturally conditioned images people have in mind. • Interrelated cultural patterns which support needs satisfaction. • Curiosity about the target culture and empathy towards its people raise students interest in learning that language.

  5. Task:Describe your country’s traditional wedding ceremony focusing on the following cultural aspects . Present your work on transparencies:

  6. II- CRITICAL INCIDENTS • SITUATION : Mr. and Mrs. Smith have five children between the ages 10 and 20. Mr. Smith’s mother has lived in the same town as the Smiths all of their lives. Mr. Smith’s father died several years before. Mr. Smith’s mother had an accident and breaks her hip. She needs to have care everyday. The Smiths have a very small home but they could host the grand mother if some of the children double up in the bedrooms. • Task : In group discuss what should the Smiths do and why basing your answer on your culture’s beliefs and values. Report to other groups your ideas.

III- culturgrams : Name that country • Mostwomen in this country cover their hair and most of their bodies except their faces and hands in loose-fitting garments. • In this country men and women do not have physical contact in public with the exception of married or engaged couples who may walk arm in arm. • This country’s dedication to the cultural art is internationally recognized. Films and TV programming are particularly notable. • Most of the population of this country is Muslim. However, it was among the first nations visited by the Apostle Mark and Christianized within three centuries. • It has a long river that crosses the country from the north to the south. Task : write a culturgram about a country you wish to visit. Give your partners cues to guess what it is.

What can these activities about culture bring to our students ? • Demonstrate Curiosity and empathy towards people of the target culture encourages them to learn that language • Understand role expectations, social needs and images evoked while interacting. • language ability and cultural sensitivity develop global understanding and well being of any country.
