  2. Last week our focus was separating mixtures. This included: 1. Dissolving and evaporation. (How can we separate a mixture of salt and sand?) 2. Both simple and fractional distillation. (How do we extract petrol LPG and diesel from crude oil?) 3. Filtering (Research the use of filters in everyday life) 4. Chromatography 5, Centrifuging (Separating by centrifugal force)

  3. This week we should investigate the following: 1. Element and compounds 2. The work and thinking of the scientists who developed the periodic table (Hennig Brand,Johann Dobereiner, John Newlands and Dimitri Mendeleev) 3. The physical properties of both metals and non metals 4. How the periodic table is organised (Groups, periods, atomic and mass numbers) 5. The reactivity of some elements

  4. The 4 Greek elements Based purely on observation and reasoning. Early Greeks thought that all matter was composed of 4 basic elements (or building blocks). Earth Fire Air Water

  5. LOOK AT WOOD BURNING and you will see the evidence It will produce ash, (this is earth!) The wood produces fire And lots of smoke this could be air? You may see liquid bubbling up through the wood (water!)

  6. WOOD contains a mixture of all 4 elements GREEK CONCLUSION

  7. Elements are special substances because they contain only one type of atom They cannot be broken down into simpler substances by any chemical means Earth, Air Fire and water are not elements

  8. The Early Chemists (Alchemists, and Alchemy) Where? and What? The Philosopher's Stone

  9. http://chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/aa030303a.htm Timeline of Element Discovery

  10. phosphorus.VOB Before a Periodic Table could be developed it was necessary to discover the elements The first big step happened in 1649 Hennig Brand (Alchemist) discovered Phosphorus (Cold Fire)

  11. The Big Three! What did they do?

  12. unwise.mpeg thermit.mpeg practical session
