  2. Pintor francês, Poussin nasceu na Normândia, em 1594 e morreu em Roma em 1665. Em 1612 foi para Paris, onde, além de estudar e trabalhar, participou da decoração do Luxembourg com Philippe de Champaigne. Em Roma (1624) aperfeiçoou sua técnica com o estudo da perspectiva e da anatomia e, sob a proteção do cardeal Barberini, executou grande número de obras. A convite de Luís XIII retornou a Paris (1640-1642), pintando cenas da vida de Hércules para o Louvre. Voltou a Roma, onde fixou-se definitivamente. Tomando Rafael como modelo, desenvolveu estilo em que predominam o equilíbrio, a simetria, a razão.  Cultiva um estilo austero, calculado. dividindo suas telas com rigor geométrico. Poussin criou obras de grande rigor formal, procurando enredos na Bíblia e na mitologia. Usa os mitos da Antiguidade para exprimir verdades morais, exaltando heróis que rejeitam o vício em favor da virtude (Diógenes, Cipião, etc.). NICOLAS POUSSIN
