2. Characters • Paul Bunyan is exaggerated in his size and strength. • Babe is a big blue ox that becomes Paul’s helper and friend. • Paul’s parents raised him on a farm when he was young.

3. Setting • The story takes place in early America. Paul was a logger and worked outdoors creating mountains, rivers, and lakes.

4. Beginning • It’s said that Paul was born in Maine, but no one really knows for sure. He was the largest, smartest, and strongest baby! Before he could talk he started to collect trees.

5. Middle • Paul’s family moved to the wilderness. He raced with the deer and wrestled with the grizzly bears. • He found an ox and named him Babe. • He said good-bye to his parents. • He met the Gumbertoos. • They had a wild, rough and tumble rumpus.

6. Middle • It took six weeks to untangle. • Paul built a colossal flapjack griddle and greased it with bacon laced to their feet. • Paul dug the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes so barges could bring in the syrup. • The men leveled the Great Plains and shaved the slopes of the Rockies.

7. Middle • A blizzard hit and lasted for many years. • Babe ate the snow. • They traveled southwest. • Paul cut the Grand Canyon. • Paul staged a blizzard of popcorn.

8. End • Paul crossed California and reached the Pacific Ocean. • It’s said that Paul gave up his lumbering ways. Some say you can still hear his burst of laughter in the wild Alaskan mountains.

9. Exaggerations • He could blow out a candle and be in bed before the light went out. • The woodsmen sailed up to bed in balloons and parachuted down to breakfast. • They greased the griddle with bacon laced to their feet. • They brought syrup to camp in barges.
