  2. We know how fantastic engineered wood flooring can be, which is why we pride ourselves on offering the best hardwood flooring around. Quality comes first but we don't expect you to pay a fortune for it, and with plenty of different engineered hardwood flooring ranges to choose from you're bound to find something that suits your tastes and budget perfectly. What is engineered wood flooring? Engineered wood flooring is manufactured using a top layer of real hardwood with either a three ply or multi-ply base. This can comprise of plywood, softwood, or even an HDF board, and the top veneer of hardwood typically ranging from between 3-4mm in thickness. Engineered wood floors provide all the beauty and charm of a solid wood floor with excellent dimensional stability and versatility. Because the top layer of hardwood is attached to a layered ply base, this reduces the expansion and contraction that a solid wood floor is prone to. There is no visual difference between a single plank engineered board and a solid wood floor once installed. Can Engineered Wood Flooring Be Used With Underlay? Many consumers choose engineered wood floors over solid wood floors because it is very versatile when it comes to installation. Not only is it suitable to stick down using an elastic adhesive such as Sikabond, you can also float the floor down onto a wooden flooring underlay, and engineered wood floors are ideal to use in conjunction with under floor heating systems. Engineered wood panels are also wider and longer than solid planks. For example, plank width is not limited as it can be with solid hardwood. They can also be nailed over joists without any plywood sub-flooring. These types of panel are ideal for areas where solid wood flooring is not suitable, such as over concrete or in basements. 3. Solid wood floors are manufactured from a single piece of timber, and offer the consumer the most authentic and natural wood flooring option possible. They are normally 18-20mm thick; therefore they withstand years of wear and the stresses of everyday life. They can also be sanded down and re-finished numerous times, which truly makes solid wood a floor for life. High Quality Solid Wood Flooring When choosing a solid wood floor, there is a range of different widths, lengths and finishes available to you. The most common width range tends to be between 130-150mm, although solid wood floors can be as narrow as 90mm, and up to 200mm wide, depending on species. With ease and convenience becoming increasingly important to consumers, prefinished solid wood floors are a very popular option. The two main finishes to decide between are an oiled or lacquered finish. However, there are many other finishing options to consider like brushed, hand-scraped, stained, distressed, and eco-oiled. Alternatively, consider purchasing an unfinished solid wood floor and have it finished in a colour or finish of your choice once fitted. The majority of solid wood floors sold are oak, although there is a plenty of choice available, including walnut, ash, maple, and many exotic species like merbau, jatoba, wenge, and tiger wood to name just a few. Virtually all hardwood flooring is put together with a tongue and groove fitting, and the most common methods of installation are to stick down using an elastic adhesive or to secret nail. Because of the natural way solid wood floors expand and contract you should not float the floor over a flooring underlay, although new systems are now available such as full stick down underlays, and hybrid underlay systems such as the SikaAcoubond system. 4. Parquet flooring owes its name to the French word parquetries, this dates back to the mid to late 1600’s and is associated with the great palace of Versailles. Parquet wood flooring is a type/design of wood flooring that is made up from small strips of wood. These blocks of wood are laid in either a regular or geometric pattern depending on design chosen. The decorative effect of parquet flooring can be further enhanced by the use of different wood species. Using woods such as wood such as walnut, oak, cherry, merbau, maple and pine. The using of different species can not only enhance the look and feel of a room but also introduce some good contrasts into the flooring. Laying parquet flooring is not suited to an inexperienced floor fitter and requires both skill and knowledge to achieve high level finish results. Parquet flooring is available in engineered and solid wood flooring. Engineered parquet offers a wider variety of choice such as colour, bevelled edge and board size. Engineered parquet as the name suggests is a board constructed of different layers and topped with a real wood veneer. This prefinished element is attractive to buyers as they can see what they are getting before it goes into their home. Engineered parquet can also provide the fitter with an easier method of installation in the form of click fit. Engineered parquet flooring on the other hand is made from layers of different types of wood, topped by hardwood. No matter whether you choose solid or engineered parquet flooring, the end look will be the same. To maintain a parquet floor it is important to pay attention to the type of finish used on the parquet floor. If the block flooring is finished with an oil then we recommend the Osmo range of products. If the flooring is finished with a lacquer then we would recommend the Bona range of wood floor maintenance products. If you have any questions with regards to the maintenance or the fitting of solid or engineered parquet wood flooring please contact one of the team here at Source Wood Floors who will be more than happy to help.
