  1. Is PGS the way Forward Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) is the genetic profiling of the embryos prior to implantation and is a form of embryo screening. It is similar to prenatal diagnosis and used predominantly to screen for a specific genetic disease. PGS used to denote procedures that do not look for a specific disease but use PGD (Preimplantation genetic diagnosis) techniques to identify embryos at risk. Embryos with abnormal chromosomes results in unwanted miscarriage, a failed treatment cycle or the unlikely chance of a child having Down syndrome. To avoid the unwanted issues, PGS is advised by the leading infertility specialists for a healthy baby. Identifying the abnormal chromosomes is the key here and only embryos without chromosomal abnormalities are placed back in the womb. What does PGS Test entails? The PGS test is designed mainly to examine embryos for chromosome abnormalities. PGS identifies the embryos with the correct number of chromosomes thus the doctors can select the embryo with the best chance for a successful IVF. Embryos having the correct number of chromosomes is deemed to have the best chance for a successful procedure. PGS is one of the best options available for the couples in order to avoid high risk of having a child affected with a genetic disease prior to fertilization. It is an attractive yet accurate means of preventing genetic diseases. Who are the perfect candidates for the PGS procedure? Any woman undergoing IVF can opt for PGS procedure. Woman having the family history of chromosome defects should opt for it. People having trouble with recurrent IVF failures can undergo it. As a woman ages, the potential for chromosomally abnormal embryos significantly increases, thereby older woman planning for conception should do the PGS procedure. PGS process: Embryos are produced during the normal IVF cycle. Embryos biopsy done to analyses the embryos. The chromosomes analyzed to see how many are there and identifying if they are normal or not. Benefits of PGS: • Increased chances of pregnancy • Reduces the risk of miscarriage due to fewer abnormal embryos. • PGS is more successful in transferring a single embryo • Doctor will explain how PGS might help you and how it would help you in your fertility process.
