Fatty Acids and Metabolism

Fatty acids refer to an aliphatic hydrocarbon chain with the long end that contains a carboxyl, also a type of organic matter, the general expression of straight chain saturated fatty acids is C (n) H (2 n 1) COOH, lower fatty acid is a colorless liquid, senior fatty acid is a waxy solid without obvious smell.

  1. Fatty Acids and Metabolism Simple introduction Fatty acids refer to an aliphatic hydrocarbon chain with the long end that contains a carboxyl, also a type of organic matter, the general expression of straight chain saturated fatty acids is C (n) H (2 n + 1) COOH, lower fatty acid is a colorless liquid, senior fatty acid is a waxy solid without obvious smell. The effects of fatty acids The four main functions of fatty acids in human body are to supply heat, store energy and synthesize the raw materials. And the emphasis is essential fatty acids which are irreplaceable for the body to maintain a normal metabolism. However, they cannot be synthesized by ourselves, but through food supply. So what are the effects of essential fatty acids on the human body Firstly,Essential fatty acids not only attract water to moisturize skin cells, but also prevent water loss. Then it is an important component of phospholipids to maintain normal visual function. What’s more, it participates in the formation of animal sperm so that the amount of essential fatty acids affects our growth and reproductive dysfunction. Fatty acid metabolism Fatty acid metabolism is a process of breaking down fatty acids in the body, and it is an important part of turning diet into usable ingredients. According to the above, fatty acids play a crucial role in the body, such as building new proteins and storing energy. These chemical structures are essential for survival. Metabolic diseases involving fatty acids pose a potential health risk. Classification Fatty acids are mostly aliphatic carboxylic acids with even carbon atoms, which are also called free fatty acids (FFAs) when they exist alone. Depending on the number of carbon atoms, it can be divided into short chain fatty acids, medium chain and very long chain fatty acids. According to whether there are double bonds in the molecule, there are saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids. From the perspective of nutrition, it can be divided into essential fatty acids and non-essential fatty acids. These different types of fatty acids also play a vital role in human health. Let’s take an example here: Free fatty acids in the blood are mainly intermediate products of fat metabolism and are important metabolites

  2. for energy metabolism of cells. It provides energy for the metabolism of heart, liver, skeletal muscle and other organs. FFA is a critically contributing factor to the incidence of glucose metabolic disorder, insulin resistance and hypertension. Its metabolic abnormality can sensitively reflect the abnormal lipid metabolism. Significantly elevated plasma free fatty acid has been found in patients with coronary heart disease by studies, which facilitates to coronary heart disease, arrhythmias and some other related complications by mechanisms of inducing oxidative stress and disturbing vascular endothelial cellular function. As an energy metabolic substrate for myocardial cell, free fatty acid plays and important role in energy metabolism of heart failure patients, disorder of which may exasperate myocardial cell energy metabolism of these patients. Researches have found apparent decreasing utility of free fatty acid and increasing concumpution of blood glucose by myocardial cell of heart failure patients during energy metabolism compared with normal adults. Summary and outlook As the body's energy of a material, fatty acids’ metabolic abnormalities can be sensitive response of lipid metabolism disorders, can also cause sugar metabolic disorder. Moreover, the occurrence of hypertension is significantly related to them. How to choose correct intervention target of fatty acid metabolism and long-term therapeutic effect are no large long-term clinical trials confirmed that need more in-depth and long-term exploration and practice.
