  1. The gift of the earth has enriched human civilization in multiple ways Over years, human civilization has progressed in many fields with new inventions. Mother earth made lots of contributions to this progress. The use of natural stone is one of them. By saying “natural stone” we mean the products quarried from the earth and used over many thousands of years as building materials and decorative enhancements. As the earth’s crust began to expand and erode, heat and pressure pushed up the solid minerals up to the earth’s surface which form colossal rock beds. It took up to one hundred million years to form some of these beds. Natural stone is a mountain-acquired mineral, which includes quartzite, slate, limestone, sandstone, marble, granite, and others. The use of these stones is mainly in residential and commercial flooring and wall cladding, owing to their durability, hardness, and aesthetic appearance. The largest natural stone suppliers are countries like China, Egypt, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and Turkey. Granite is the most popular natural stone in the market. It is available in thousands of patterns and colors and is also highly durable, making them a favorite of homeowners. Other natural stones like sandstone, travertine, and slate are also recommended for wall stone cladding. The most appreciated granite stone cladding is due to its durability and availability in several shades and surface design patterns – but sandstone cladding is generally preferred for its weathered, natural looks. Since natural stones are resistant to heat, cold, moisture, and pressure, they make an ideal choice for wall cladding. Stone walls are thick and heavy, reducing floor space. It also has a high self-weight, in combination with low flexural strength, tensile strength, and seismic resistance. Stone masonry is always time-consuming work and it requires skilled workers as no alteration or repair work can be done later. The minimum thickness of the stone wall is restricted to 350mm, while the brick wall on the other hand is generally 100mm only. However, we can always say that stone is the better material.
