Are Assembled Gemstones Natural or Synthetic

While the elements of doublets of gemstones and other forms may be found naturally, the stones aren't naturally occurring. For instance, a gem cutter could glue a tiny piece of natural opal over the natural onyx. The components are all naturally occurring however, the resulting piece isn't. Sometimes, the assembled stones contain synthetic elements such as plastic and glass.

  1. Are Assembled Gemstones Natural or Synthetic? While the elements of doublets of gemstones and other forms may be found naturally, the stones aren't naturally occurring. For instance, a gem cutter could glue a tiny piece of natural opal over the natural onyx. The components are all naturally occurring however, the resulting piece isn't. Sometimes, the assembled stones contain synthetic elements such as plastic and glass. Why Do People Create Assembled Gemstones? The most common reasons are: · Utilizing incompatible or fragile gem material. · The creation of a completely new type of gem product. · A low-cost simulant of pricey natural gemstones. · (Unfortunately) fooling a buyer to believe that the item is more valuable. Gemstone Doublets and Triplets The majority of gem lovers will recognize triplets and doublets especially the opal types. Ethiopian Opal are often found as thin seams of mineral within the matrix or host rock. While they are beautiful, some deposits are fragile and thin to be suitable for jewelry. But, gluing one of these thin layers to solid backing materials like Black Onyx or or opal and similar materials, can create the triplet or doublet. A doublet is a very thin layer of opal, which is then glued to the black base. Triplets add an opaque cap layer.

  2. Combining these materials can accomplish two objectives. The first is that the solid backing gives the strength and thickness required for setting. The result is a jewelry piece strong enough to withstand wear. The dark hue behind a transparent gem like opal can make the normally translucent opal layer appear to be dark grey or black opal. This is why the variation of color in the gemstone material appears sharp contrast against the dark background. The visible surface of an opal doublette is still quite soft. So, jewelry wearers need to be careful when handling these pieces. Opal beads jewelry is a particular type of jewelry that requires treatment and cleaning techniques. However, properly executed and maintained for doublets look stunning and can be affordable, robust jewelry pieces. Faceted Gemstone Doublets Gemstone doublets may also be cut into facets, as you will observe below. The gem cutter first creates an "rough" state. Then the material is cut to create a unique optical effect. Opal Triplets Opal triplets come with an uncolored, often domed, cap which is bonded onto the triplet. The caps are typically made of hard, scratch-resistant materials like quartz crystals and synthetic colorless spinel or even Teal Sapphire Rings that is synthetically colored. While they are very durable, triplets generally don't have the natural look of properly-crafted doublets.
