  3. VHS and VHS-C Transfers Most people have old VHS tapes taking up room somewhere in their closets, garages and attics. These are still probably the most common tapes you will find old home movies on. Unfortunately, these days, VCR’s have pretty much gone extinct so there is no way to play back your precious memories. MINIDV/HDV/DVCAM When these came out in the 90’s, they were a game changer for consumers. They were compact, easy to use and produced high quality footage. MiniDV is also very flaky when it comes to longevity and deteriorates rapidly over time so it is important to act now before it’s too late to save your home movies.

  4. Hi8, VIDEO8 & DIGITAL8 Transfers For a window of time from the late 80s to the late 90s, these tapes were considered the latest technology. Starting with Video8, advancing to Hi8, and then ending with Digital8, it seems everyone had a handy-cam that used these tapes back then. U-MATIC Transfers These were among the first video formats to contain the videotape inside a cassette and were introduced by SONY in 1969. The quality of the footage captured on these Pro-sumer tapes was excellent for the time. U-matic players are now almost nonexistent to consumers so it’s nearly impossible to even watch the footage found on these tapes.
