  1. Vedanta Seeks Approval for Green Sterlite Copper Plant Vedanta Limited has recently approached the Madras High Court seeking approval for a green copper manufacturing plant, marking a renewed focus on sustainable industrial development and responsible resource management.

  2. A Fresh Proposal with a Focus on Green Manufacturing Vedanta has approached the High Court with a different request, asking for its permission to start a new green copper manufacturing facility. According to the petition, Vedanta has submitted several representations between June and November to the Secretaries of the Tamil Nadu Industries and Environment Departments, urging them to look into this matter. However, VedantaSterlite Copper request was not considered at all.

  3. Copper's Role in India's Growth Story Today, copper plays an important role in several sectors, such as renewable energy, power transmission, electric vehicles, electronics, and construction. With surging copper demand, India's dependency on copper also increases manifold. However, at the time, when Sterlite Copper was operational, it was meeting close to 40% of the country's total copper demand while massively supporting other industries as well.

  4. What is the Green Manufacturing Approach? The proposed Vedanta Thoothukudi copper plant will follow an advanced environmental standard, prioritising lower emissions, efficient resource utilisation, and improved waste management. Green copper facilities typically rely more on recycling and cleaner processing technologies, helping reduce the overall environmental footprint associated with metal production.

  5. Conclusion The recent application submitted by Vedanta to the Madras High Court is an important move towards attempting to have a green copper manufacturing proposal within India's legal and regulatory framework. As the court ordered that the matter related to Sterlite Copper be heard alongside the pending cases, the process now takes the next step under the jurisdiction of the court.
