  1. Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper: A Key Contributor to India's Economic Development?

  2. Agenda While talking about India's industrial growth, copper plays a crucial role due to its applications in future technology and energy transition. From being used in power and infrastructure to electric vehicles and renewable energy, copper is a critical mineral and vital in the global energy transition. One of the major players contributing to India’s copper supply was Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, accounting for up to 40% of the country's copper output.

  4. About Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper Plant Recognized for its contribution to the nation’s GDP, attention to sustainability and transparent business practices, Vedanta Group has been listed as one of the renowned players in the nation’s copper industry. Sterlite Copper has been a key business unit within Vedanta, specialising in copper production and refining in India. Vedanta Sterlite operated a smelter, refinery, and other related facilities, primarily located in Tuticorin (Thoothukudi), Tamil Nadu and has been a significant contributor to India's refined copper demand, supplying a substantial portion.

  5. Conclusion Vedanta’s Sterlite copper plant played a big role in Indian copper supply, fulfilling about 40% of the country’s copper demand. When the Vedanta Tuticorin Plant was closed suddenly, thousands of workers’ lives and India’s industrial future were affected for the worse. This also dented the government’s vision of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbharta’ as most of the copper demand is now met through imports. Being a critical mineral, demand for copper is only set to grow and self-reliance on its production is vital.
