Quail Hunting And Other Wing-Shooting Opportunities

Wing-shooting represents for many the same as what white-tail deer hunting means to the hunter whose preference this discipline is. Of course, the activities are not mutually exclusive and for many they carry the same weight in terms of which they bring joy and offer great opportunities to make lasting memories. Therefore it is not unusual that individuals may actually enjoy both options.

  1. Quail Hunting And Other Wing-Shooting Opportunities Wing-shooting represents for many the same as what white-tail deer hunting means to the hunter whose preference this discipline is. Of course, the activities are not mutually exclusive and for many they carry the same weight in terms of which they bring joy and offer great opportunities to make lasting memories. Therefore it is not unusual that individuals may actually enjoy both options. In the American South, for example in states such as Alabama and bordering regions, deer hunting and wing-shooting are popular among not only the locals, but also with visitors from much further away. Therefore lodges compete for the attention and business of such hunters and visitors, and they make sure they go to great lengths to offer these visitors the best in terms of what leading lodges are known for, right from fine food and good accommodation to offering them those animals and birds they have come out for. In states such as Alabama, at a leading lodge such as Westervelt and one or two others, quail hunting is a popular activity that many wing-shooters look forward to every season. Hunting quail over a willing dog is part of the pleasure. That is why experienced quail hunters often bring their own dogs to those lodges where this is allowed, or if they do not have their own pointers, they hope the lodge manager or owner will offer them a good dog. In Alabama’s Black Belt, quail hunting at specific lodges is offered as a preferred activity, and the lodge goes out of their way to ensure their visitors are offered the best opportunity to come across healthy, plump birds that are there for the taking. But one must always remember that nothing happens by chance, and that includes the availability of quail in good condition. At the lodge where management has processes in place to promote bird numbers you are more likely to find the quail – or other upland birds – you have come to hunt. It is a fact that quail and other upland bird populations are only really found in abundance at lodges where active management practices to support the best habitat for these birds, are implemented and developed. Whether the hunter enjoys dove shoots more than quail hunting or pheasant shooting or, for that matter, wild turkey hunting, does not matter. What is important is that the lodge makes sure they create the best conditions for these birds to thrive and not leave. Therefore they make sure they create and develop the type of habitat that the birds prefer. This means having to make sure there is applicable cover and safe areas for the birds to roost, making sure that food plots are added as part of their management plans, and making sure they keep proper records season after season to study the behavior of the birds. Quail hunting in the Southeast has been popular for many decades and continues to pique the interest of wing-shooters, especially at good lodges where good populations are known to be found and where lodge owners are known to make hunting trips special for their visitors, whether you arrive to hopefully bag a number of quail, or dove, or pheasant – or a combination of these. The same is true for good whitetail deer hunting: the best lodges are the ones that do the business. In the Southeast, for example, quail hunting is offered in different styles, especially if the shooter visits a leading lodge. Examples include quail hunting on horseback which has been popular for ages – with your hunting dog by your side – or from the old, traditional mule drawn wagon, buggies and, of course, controlled walkabouts. These are some important considerations to ensure a successful quail hinting trip. Not only landowners know this. The astute wing-shooter is also informed and will, therefore, visit the lodge that offers superior opportunities.
