  1. Whitetail Deer Hunting – Finding The Best Lodge Deer hunters, also those whose preference the whitetail deer of Alabama’s Black Belt region is, are always on the lookout for the best destination comes the season. These days everybody knows there are some great hunting lodges to choose from in the state, so there are choices. A few good ones will always stand out, such as the well-known Westervelt Lodge at Aliceville in western Alabama among some. Of course there are others too, and the hunter will choose the one that meets his expectations in terms of which reputation, quality of buck and doe’s (where hunting the latter is allowed) and budget will be looked at. The Black Belt is that section of the central part of the state which is known for offering the best hunts. So, if you book yourself a few days at a lodge in this region, you are already off to a good start. It is the best area for those in search of good trophies and memorable experiences, stretches about 40 miles north and south of Interstate 80 and is generally speaking the region where the best whitetail deer hunts are recorded. So, what makes one lodge better than another, accepting that there are many good choices in the region? One aspect that has always stood out and which is always mentioned for growing quality buck, will be what deer and habitat management plans and systems a lodge has in place to help ensure great whitetail hunts in Alabama. Good (or bad) deer and habitat management can greatly influence the numbers and quality of the deer found on a specific stretch of land such as a lodge. Part of this is to know how to count your buck and to catalogue them so you know exactly what you can offer the hunter that visits. One of the most popular methods that landowners employ in this regard refers to motion- sensor cameras that are a great aid to count and categorize buck in, for example, age groups. Of course this also tells the owner what the ratio: buck-to-doe is and it helps to record aspects such as buck size. This is great for both the landowner and the hunter as the owner knows what he is offering and what measures he has to put in place to keep the balance buck to doe, and for the hunter it gives an idea of what they can hunt. The good lodges make sure they have these management systems in place, and they will make use of cameras and other ways of recording deer activity on their lands. Managing your herds for age, for example, will involve placing cameras every 100 acres or so, near good food sources. It will take time to build up a good data base of information on the herd, even up to two weeks, for example, which is to be expected if you want to detail up to, say, 95% of the herd on your land/lodge. These cameras and other systems help the lodge owner to grow a sizeable herd, but not too big since quality buck can only be raised on land where the animals do not have to compete for survival. Therefore not only doe’s are protected more than buck, but young bucks are often protected to help grow a quality herd. All of these aspects combine to ensure lodge owners give themselves the best chance at raising good herds, which directly benefits the visiting hunter. Astute lodge owners plant food plots, they build shooting houses, they supplement deer’s food, they scout their property to know where their hunters will be offered the best quality buck. When a lodge has these systems in place, they are more likely to be able to offer their hunters the buck they want to hunt, and repeat the exercise year after year.
