  1. Weight loss Programs for Women - Choose the Right One To maintain good health, healthy weight is an important element. What you eat and how much you eat plays a very important role in maintaining a healthy weight. Women always struggle to lose weight compared to men. It is not impossible to lose weight for all, it’s just that it might take a little longer for some. There are many diets that are available – on the internet, magazines, newspapers, etc. that claim weight loss in a short period of time. But are they safe? Do they even work for you? Most of these diets are “FAD DIETS”. Fad diets are stylish weight loss programs that promise quick weight loss through unhealthy and unbalanced eating. They concentrate on particular foods which can make the diet boring and not long lasting. They can also harm your health even if followed for a short period of time, some examples of fad diets being: 1.Liquid Diet: Liquid diets are low-calorie foods in the liquid form. This means one can have fruits and vegetables in juice, smoothies or soup form. Liquid diets in the long run in an attempt to lose weight may lead to weak immunity, nausea, improper brain function, constipation, muscle loss, etc 2.Grapefruit Diet: Eating a single fruit throughout the day helps to lose weight is what this diet says. But, this diet lacks in most vital nutrients that our body requires to keep functioning. 3.High Protein Diet: This diet requires you to eat high amount protein foods like chicken, fish, eggs, beans, etc to build muscle strength and lose fat. But, such a diet lacks other nutrients and can add to the fat and calories of the diet. 4.Atkins diet: This is a low carbohydrate diet, which means there is an increase in the protein and fat intake. Although there is weight loss on a low carbohydrate diet, the effects of high protein and fat intake can affect long term health, especially from the animal foods. 5.Cabbage Soup Diet: As the name suggests, the cabbage soup diet requires you to drink large amounts of cabbage soup for seven days. It claims that you can lose a good amount of weight through this diet. However, as with the other fad diets, it is not easy to stick with it. Also, key nutrients for health are completely missed when on this diet. It can also leave one feeling weak and fatigued.

  2. So, how does one recognize fact from fad? Ask the following questions to know if the diet is a fad diet or not: Is there a promise of a quick weight loss? Is there a claim that sounds too good to be true? Is there a list of “good foods” and “bad foods”? Does it eliminate major food group / groups? Are there product’s being sold with the diet? Is there any scientific research supporting the claims? If the answer to one or more of the above questions is a “Yes” then, you are probably looking at a fad diet. So, what does one look out for in a genuine weight loss program? - The program should focus and involve counselling on a lifestyle change - educating you on how to develop and continue with healthy eating and physical activity habits The program should involve ongoing monitoring on the progress - in person or any other method The program should set weight loss goals which are steady and slow, not a quick fix solution The program should also involve motivating the individual to achieve the goals through counselling And finally, the program should look into a plan that helps in maintaining weight once it has been shed - - - - Fad diets may help in initial weight loss, but they rarely help keep off the weight for a long period of time. Coupled with this are the health risks associated with these diets, including the nutrient deficiencies. It is easy to ignore the lifestyle changes and reach out for the easy solutions. A lifestyle change will ensure that the healthy habits are continued for life and this helps keeping the weight under check.
