  8. The story so far … • S1 - range of subjects, broad curriculum, with opportunities for Inter-Disciplinary Learning (IDL) • S2 – continuation of broad curriculum and opportunities for IDL; introduction of “electives” in some curricular areas

  11. S3 Core – all pupils study: • English (4 periods) • Maths (4 periods) • Physical Education (3 periods) • Personal & Social Education (2 periods) • Religious & Moral Education (1 period)

  12. S3 Specialisation – maintaining a broad curriculum: • 2 discrete Social Studies • 2 discrete Sciences • 2 discrete Expressive Arts / Modern Langs • 2 discrete Health and Wellbeing / Technology / Modern Langs (each of the above are studied for 2 periods)

  17. Level 4 in S3 Pupils will continue to work at a level suitable to their progress from S2. Most pupils will be working at Level 4. In most subjects, pupils will begin preparatory work for their NQs in S4 during their second and third terms.

  18. Progressing to the Senior Phase • At the end of S3, pupils will choose which subjects they will continue to study for their National Qualifications. • There will be a common choice sheet for S4-6 • Pupils may choose from a mixture of new National Qualifications (N3, N4, N5), Highers and Advanced Highers according to their ability and in discussion with staff. • To allow progression, subjects grouped together in S3 will continue into Senior Phase as appropriate.

Progression into S4: • Most S4 pupils will choose to study subjects at National 3, National 4, and National 5. • All pupils will take English and Maths • Pupils choose an additional 5 subjects (continuing courses they have taken in S3). • Pupils will also have 1 period each of Core PE and Personal & Social Education.

Progression into S5/6 • Most pupils in S5 choose subjects from the range of National Qualifications and Highers offered, according to their ability. • In addition, pupils in S6 will be able to choose from a menu of Advanced Highers. • Pupils should choose courses which continue from their earlier studies, unless opting for a “crash” course not previously offered, e.g. National 5 Accounts. • Pupils will have an additional 5 periods of Core, including Leadership for S6.

  22. Progression into S5/6 Most pupils in S5 choose subjects from the range of National Qualifications and Highers offered, according to their ability. S2/3 CHOICES PROCESS WORK WITH PUPILS IN SOCIAL EDUCATION: • Interests • Strengths and weaknesses • Careful analysis of report cards and progress checks • How to make good decisions • How to access information • Considering range of subjects on offer and their suitability to the individual and awareness of balance and breadth to ensure range of future options • Considering a range of careers available, qualifications required, skills required, the nature of the work involved

  25. S2/3 SPECIALISATION PROCESS WORK WITH PUPILS IN PSE Options should be discussed with the following people: Family (including older brothers and sisters) Pastoral Teacher Subject Teachers Friends TAKE ADVICE!!!!

  26. S2/3 CHOICES PROCESS S2 ACTION PLAN FUTURE PATHWAY At the moment I intend to : Leave after S4 S5 S6 Go to college after S4 S5 S6 Get a job after S4 S5 S6 Go to University after S5 S6 Or I am unsure at this stage

  27. Confirmation/Communication • Parents/carers will be informed of final choices by letter at the end of April / start of May
