  1. 3D Realism Jess Johnson Thesis 9/09/08

  2. Idea • Find a way to incorporate 3D environments for educational use.

  3. Process • Through my summer research, I began looking into the level of detail that can be achieved with 3D animation.

  4. Process • Movies that have influenced my direction included Pixar’s “Ratatouille”, “Toy Story 2” and “Cars”. It was also these movies that led me to concentrate on environments, as opposed to character animation.

  5. Tree Texturing Prototype • For my first prototype, I decided to test and see where my texturing skills were, and if I could realistically add texture.

  6. Tree Texturing Prototype

  7. Results • Texturing and adding bump map was successful. • Need to improve the edges of the texture, especially if it is repeating.

  8. UV Texture Mapping Prototype • The aim for this prototype was to see if I could use the UV snapshot to alter the texture in Photoshop.

  9. UV Texture Mapping Prototype

  10. Results • Able to re-import the texture into Maya. • Unable to re-texture the object. • Need more practice with updating textures from Photoshop.

  11. Grass Test • Knowing I wanted to create an environment, I needed to know how to get a realistic look with grass.

  12. Grass Test

  13. Results • The grass tutorial was helpful, was able to recreate more realistic grass. • Need to focus on more variations in the grass.

  14. Light Prototypes • From the movies and animations I had been researching, I needed to practice my lighting skills to be able to recreate realistic lighting.

  15. Outdoor Lighting • My first lighting test was to see how I could recreate realistic outdoor lighting from an image.

  16. Outdoor Light Prototype

  17. Results • Needs more variation with the type of light. • Need to work on recreating the shape of the glow, and the scattering of the light.

  18. HDR Image Test • In addition to outdoor lighting, I wanted to see how an HDR image would work for lighting. I took a photo and converted it to HDR to see what the results would look like.

  19. HDR Image Test

  20. Results • Environment lighting worked, and reflections can be seen on the objects. • Image didn’t work - needs to be panoramic. • Need to find a better setting, one with a foreground and background.

  21. Movement Prototype • I wanted to learn about movement in an environment, especially in grass. This test was to see how I could achieve a slight breeze in the grass.

  22. Movement Prototype

  23. Results • Newest prototypes - still in development. • Need to research more into hair movement.

  24. Finding a Purpose • Incorporating the use of 3D in educational settings. • Paul Debevec’s “The Parthenon” combines 3D realism and has an educational purpose.

  25. Questions for Teachers • What subject and grade do you teach? • What software do you use for those classes if any? • How do the kids respond to the programs? • Do these programs seem helpful? • Is there anything that could be changed to help students learn? Added?

  26. Questions for Students • How often do you use a computer? • Do you use it primarily for fun, or for educational use? • Are there any changes you would like to see in the programs you use at school?

  27. Next Steps • Hand out the surveys for both the students and teachers. • Research into their curriculums and determine what would be the best option to focus on. • Research more on the use of 3D for educational uses. • Improve texturing prototypes. • Experiment with various lights in Maya.
