  2. ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI Brief History of the University The Foundation Act for the University of Thessaloniki was approved on June 5, 1925, by the fourth Constitutional Assembly. The university started to operate in 1926, with Georgios Chatzidakis as its first president. The Foundation Act focused on the development of humanities, as the views of the period demanded. The Faculty of Philosophy first operated in 1926. Nowadays the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is considered to be the biggest university in Greece. It is located in the city centre and it expands over an area of around 430,000 square meters. On the whole it consists of 7 faculties, which have a total of 37 departments, of 5 single-department faculties and of 4 independent departments.

ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI 98,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students are currentlyenrolled at A.U.Th. 90,000 of them attend undergraduate coursesand 8,000 attend postgraduate courses (A and B cycle). • The Teaching and Research Staff comes up to 2,304 people(742 professors, 514 associate professors, 538 assistantprofessors and 465 lecturers) • The Scientific Teaching Staff amounts to 84 people • The Special Laboratory Teaching Staff comes up to 297 people • 6 teachers of the Greek Language and 13 teachers of foreignlanguages. • Support is also offered to educational projects by 317 members of the Special TechnicalLaboratory Staff and • to administrative projects by 466 permanent employees and 563employees who are employed under an unlimited term contract.

ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI The Aristotle University is consisted of the following faculties: - Faculty of Theology - Faculty of Veterinary - Faculty of Philosophy Medicine - Faculty of Sciences - Faculty of Medicine - Faculty of Education - Faculty of Dentistry - Faculty of Law, Economics and Political Sciences - Faculty of Fine Arts - Faculty of Agriculture - Faculty of Engineering - Faculty of Forestry and Natural Environment and independent schools: - School of Pharmacy - School of Journalism and Mass Media Studies - School of Physical Education and Sports Science - School of Physical Education and Sports Science (Serres)

  5. ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI A.U.Th Administration The main administrative bodies of the A.U.TH. are: The Senate, the Rector’s Council and the Rector. The Rector and the three Vice-rectors are supported by the central administration, which is consisted of three General Directorates: • General Directorate of Administrative Services • General Directorate of Financial Services • General Directorate of Technical Services and Computerisation Under the General Directorate of Administrative Services, there is the Directorate for Coordination of Academic Units, which consists of five departments: • Department of International Relations • Department of European Educational Programmes • Department of Public Relations • Department of Studies • Department of Career

ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKILanguage Courses for LLP/Erasmus Students GREEK LANGUAGE COURSES FOR LLP/ERASMUS STUDENTS • -There are four two-week courses organized specifically for LLP/ERASMUS students at the beginning of each semester: two in October and two in March (beginners') • -The School of Modern Greek Language of A.U.T.H organizes Erasmus Intensive Language Courses on the following periods: • a)Intensive Summer Course • b)Intensive Winter Course

ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI Greek Student Services Student ServicesThe state provides a set of administrative, financial and other servicesto students so as to facilitate their studies.These services include contributory scholarships, interest-free educationalloans, catering and housing services (for students with a low family income),health care, counseling and psychological support, access to the internet,lower fares for transportation (student pass), etc.The financial allowances include free textbooks to all students andaccess to university libraries.In addition to the above, A.U.Th. provides its students with accessto the University Sports Centre and the University Summer Camp inPosidi, Chalkidiki.
