  1. The Role of a Home Health Caregiver Home health care is provided to older adults with a disability or other condition who want to remain as independent as possible. It offers a comprehensive range of medical services and may often defer the need for more extensive long-term nursing home care. Home health care can include physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, and specialized nursing. Many people on home health care have a continuing medical condition that limits their ability to perform the basic daily tasks of life. A number of home health care agencies are available to provide this type of assistance to older adults who want to remain as healthy as possible. They provide skilled care by keeping them in their own homes as much as possible. Some offer services 24 hours a day. Others may only provide service during certain times of the week, such as at night. Most home health care services may include assistance with bathing and dressing, as well as transportation to and from the home. Some agencies will also provide aide preparation and meal preparation. Senior home health aides will often be supervised by licensed practical nurses. Licensed practical nurses (LPN) work under the supervision of a doctor or registered nurse (RN). The LPN may have specialized training in caring for elder children. In some instances, LPNs work in child care settings where they are responsible for preparing and feeding young children and assisting parents with their children's needs. Other types of home health care services may involve assisting caregivers with activities of daily living, such as bathing, eating, drinking, and
