VUcept 2006Vanderbilt’s New Student Orientation Organization • VUcept has been involved in fall orientation since 1963! • VUceptors are Vanderbilt undergraduates who volunteer and receive training to: • Work with small groups of freshmen during the time between move-in Saturday and the beginning of classes the following Wednesday. • Coordinate the Move Crew. • Develop The Book. • Plan events for DoreSTEPS such as Commodores in the Community, Nashville Night, and Fall Festival. • Organize the Student Organization Fair early in the fall semester. • Eighty VUceptors were recently selected from a pool of 300+ applicants to work on the Vanderbilt Visions extended orientation program. They have already received preliminary training.

Vanderbilt Visions • An extended orientation program that will be presented to the Class of 2010. • The 1600-person freshman class will be divided into 80 small groups of 20 students each. • Each small group will be co-facilitated by a faculty member and a VUceptor. • Small groups will meet for the first time during move-in Saturday on August 19 and will continue to meet regularly until just prior to spring break in 2007. • The foundation for Vanderbilt Visions will be the 7 values of the Vanderbilt Community Creed. • Vanderbilt Visions will not involve academic credit and any issues of attendance will be handled through the student conduct office.

Fall semester (10 sessions) Active Citizenship Presentation by John Greene, M.D. Health and Wellness Relationships VUT Play + discussion Honor and Integrity Accountability Electronic Legacies 2006 Election and Citizenship Spring Semester (6 sessions) Reflection and Change Freedom Sings Campus Culture Current Events/Open Topic History of Civil Rights and Vanderbilt Closing Plenary Session with Rev. James Lawson the week of February 19th Topics for Discussion

Format for Vanderbilt Visions • 50-minute sessions; many small groups will be scheduled in the late afternoon or evening. • Faculty and VUceptors will serve as co-facilitators of the small groups. • Blackboard will support each of the 80 small groups. • A Vanderbilt Visions web page will be maintained throughout the year with suggestions for enrichment activities. • Faculty and VUceptor pairs will be sub-divided into 8 groups of 10 pairs to facilitate interchange during the academic year. • For each discussion topic, pairs will be provided with suggested readings and discussion questions. However, there will be considerable flexibility for each pair of facilitators to approach the topic in its own unique way.

  11. This is a 4+-school Effort! • Blair School of Music – 2 faculty • School of Engineering – 9 faculty • Peabody College of Education – 20 faculty • College of Arts and Science – 48 faculty • School of Law – 1 faculty member (Nick Zeppos)

  12. Additional Duties in A&S • Each Arts and Science faculty member will also serve as a pre-major advisor for the freshmen in his or her Vanderbilt Visions small group. • Separate training will be provided for pre-major advisors on the mornings of August 17 and 18.

  13. Compensation* • Faculty co-facilitators will receive $5,000 for their work in the Vanderbilt Visions program. • Faculty will also receive compensation for their service as pre-major advisors. • VUceptors will receive a book store credit of $500 per semester for their service in Vanderbilt Visions. *Funding provided by the Provost

We need you to… • Serve as a faculty facilitator for Vanderbilt Visions. • Serve as a pre-major advisor for those A&S freshmen who are in a Vanderbilt Visions small group that is facilitated by a faculty member from Blair, Engineering or Peabody. • Be a promoter of Vanderbilt Visions when you encounter freshmen next fall.
