IPLU 1 Collaborative Learning • Introduce students to the concept and practice of collaborative learning and team working. • Develop the students skills in knowledge management, information technology and communication.
Unit team • Division of Social Work Studies • Institute of Sound and Vibration Research • New Generation Project • Portsmouth Institute of Medicine,Health and Social Care • School of Health Professions and Rehabilitation Sciences • School of Medicine • School of Nursing and Midwifery • School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences
Student groups - 10 students per group • One medical student* • One pharmacy student* • Three student nurses (Adult branch) • One or two student nurses (other branches) • Two or three students from other professions* • One social work student or other
Facilitators Each school taking part agreed to supply one facilitator per 10 students they have involved in the unit. Initially limited to 6 hours of contact time over the two weeks. Plus first marking their group’s assignments.

Example discovery trail questions • Health • 1. How many health and/or social service establishments are there in the area? • 2. Are there any sports facilities? Would they be accessible by all?
Example discovery trail questions • Community • 1. What charities/voluntary organisations are active in the area? • 2. Is there a community alarm scheme?
Example discovery trail questions Access 1. Is there a taxi firm in the area which has wheelchair/buggy accessible vehicles? 2. Which pub, club or public building offers the best wheelchair access?
Study week A - Group task Think about what you found out during the discovery trail and select a topic of interest to investigate further. To learn more about: Either The range of professions involved in the care received by a person who accesses services Or How different professions are viewed by other people
Study week A - assessment 1 Individual formative reflective piece on their experience of week one Submitted electronically via an interface on the common learning website

Study week A - Facilitator comment “I thought the discovery trail had really opened the eye (sic) of my group tothe 'real' world for the population needing to access health facilities. This and the shared 'adversity' stimulated a thoughtful, mature and cooperative approach.”

Study week B • Review of week A • Select topic for task “Whose information is it anyway” • Set ground rules and determine tasks • Communicate electronically - group forum • Presentation • Reflect on learning
“Whose information is it anyway” To produce a resource set that could be used to develop a leaflet or website for students on a given topic. There was a list of 11 topics to choose from. e.g. Healthy living Drugs abuse and misuse
Study week B - assessment 2 • The students were required to use their group forum to communicate with each other, they had to meet certain criteria in their contributions • e.g. • Present their search strategy and reflect on its effectiveness. • Share their learning with the rest of the group

Handbook This was given to the students in two sections. Each section distributed one week before the study week.
Facilitator comment I enjoyed it. The group worked well and did a fantastic presentation on the Friday. I got the impression they enjoyed it from the comments they made and it was fun!
