  1. Second JohnLesson 2: Living in the Truth: Blesses and Controls Antioch Christian Fellowship Spring 2012 Rev. Christopher J. Respass

  2. The Truth Blesses Believers (2 John 1-4) • The Truth Blesses Believers (v.3) John boldly asserts that the divine blessings of Grace, Mercy and Peace will be with the believers.

  3. The Truth Blesses Believers (2 John 1-4) B. Grace 1. Common definitions a) “God’s Righteousness At Christ’s Expense b) God’s unmerited favor c) Receiving from God that which you do not deserve (e.g., forgiveness).

  4. The Truth Blesses Believers (2 John 1-4) 2. Grace, in operation, views sinners as guilty and undeserving. Therefore when applied, grace bestows God’s favor upon sinners in spite of their unworthiness (Rom 5:20, Eph. 1:7-8). “what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” Psalm 8:4

  5. The Truth Blesses Believers (2 John 1-4) C. Mercy Mercy is a form of love determined by the state or condition of its object. In operation, mercy views sinners as needy and helpless (Rom 11:30-32, Eph. 2:4-5). God’s love moved the Father to send a savior because of our tremendous, spiritual need. Thus, the old saying “Mercy suits my case” is true because it acknowledges one’s sinful state.

  6. The Truth Blesses Believers (2 John 1-4) • Peace Peace is the result when both grace and mercy have been poured abundantly into one’s life. In its deepest application, it is the consequence of restored relations and harmony with God (Rom. 5:1).

  7. The Truth Blesses Believers (2 John 1-4) • Grace, Mercy and Peace summarize God’s plan of salvation. A. “God’s grace caused him to grant mercy which results in peace.” (John MacArthur, 1-3 John). B. Ephesians 2:1-10

  8. The Truth Blesses Believers (2 John 1-4) • Grace, Mercy and Peace are divine benefits and blessings because they come from the Father and the Son. A. Father—James 1:17 B. Son—2 Corinthians 1:19-20

  9. The Truth Blesses Believers (2 John 1-4) • Grace, Mercy and Peace are with you when you operate in divine truth. A. These divine blessings accompany you forevermore (compare, Psalm 23:6). B. The collaboration of grace, mercy and peace in one’s journey provide the believer comfort and blessing.

  10. The Truth Blesses Believers(2 John 1-4) Q: Can you recall a time when God’s grace or mercy has resulted in a sense of peace for you? Q: How would your life be different without God’s grace and mercy? A byproduct of God’s truth is that believers are blessed

  11. The Truth Controls Believers(2 John 1-4) Divine truthcontrols believers as we live it daily. As we walk in truth, we are aligned with God so that we remain on the straight and narrow path. "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matt 7:13-14)

  12. The Truth Blesses and Controls(2 John 1-4) Q: What obstacles prevent us from yielding to divine truth? Q: How does God’s word keep you “in line” with Him? Q: How has God’s divine truth protected you?
