  6. But Seriously… • The Norm - “doing it yourself”… • I don’t need a job description…it’s just a ____ • I’ll just post it on craigslist.com • You know, last year’s guys weren’t THAT bad. • I’ll put a sign in our window • We’ve always done it this way • So – maybe there are some new ideas?

  7. Doing it yourself – new ideas • Start EARLIER • Ask employees/friends/family for referrals (bonus based?) • Use social media – Facebook, Google+, Twitter • YES…use LOCAL PAPERS! • Hire your customers • Retirees • Veterans • Directly recruit workers of other seasonal businesses

  10. 3. Outsource • What is Outsourcing? • Outsourcing is contracting with another company or person to do a particular function. Typically, the function being outsourced is considered non-core to the business. • WHO can I outsource with? • (look around you…) • Landscaping • Painting • Tree service • Other seasonal businesses with skills

  11. Considerations for Outsourcing: • Non-compete • Non-disclosure • Long-term commitment

Pros and Cons to each approach • Do it yourself • TIME • But – Time = Money, right? • Let someone else do it • COST? • Most won’t be able to offer the full list of services • Outsource • Do you REALLY want to hire a company to do your core business function? • Long-term commitment to reap benefits • Training my competition? • Building an excellent exit strategy? • WHEN SHOULD I START? • NOW!

  13. Just a note about RETENTION • HIRE for ATTITUDE • Have a hiring PROCESS • Have up-to-date and ACCURATE job descriptions • Train, Train, Train • Pay retention bonus

  14. What I learned investigating this topic • Staffing companies are only good up to a point, but that point could be WELL worth the price. Every ‘placement’ deal is negotiated locally. • Outsourcing with the right partner could really pay dividends • Temporary/Seasonal doesn’t get you “off the hook” legally with these employees…even if you COULD use a staffing company. You really need to do your homework. • Q & A • Discussion
