  4. Money Matters What to consider…. • Cost of course contributions • Student amenities fee – library and services • Textbooks, specific equipment , fieldtrips • Accommodation • Living needs and expenses • Travel arrangements – car , public transport

  6. What does it cost? Teacher- 3 years undergraduate + 1 year postgraduate Estimate Cost: $22,592 First year Salary : $57,000 per year Civil Engineer: 4 years undergraduate study Estimate Cost: $32,200 First year salary $ 78,000 per year Job Outlook (DEEWR)

  7. Other Fees • Student Amenities Fees – covers, library, student union, facilities, services, counselling and support services for students on and off campus. • Eligible students will be able to defer payment of this fee through SA- HELP. • In 2012 maximum charge $263 per year.

How Does the HECS – HELP discount work? • Partial payment of upfront fees discount of 10% reduces the amount of student contribution • Marnie makes a partial up-front payment of $500 before the census date, which means her payment, including the discount, is $555.56. Her HECS-HELP debt will therefore be $3,000 - $555.56 = $2,444.44. • (Study Assist DEEWR)

Paying Back HECS- HELP • Students who use a HECS-HELP loan will be required to pay their debt through the tax system when they earn above the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment, even if they are still studying. • For the 2012-13 income year, the compulsory repayment threshold is $49,095. (Studyassist.gov.au)

  11. What about Interest ? • You are not charged interest on HELP debts • However your accumulated HELP debt is indexed on 1 June each year against the CPI

The Future…. • Massive Skill shortage – 2030 less than 30,000 people available to enter the workforce – west ageing workforce, east young workforce [OECD report International Symposium Sydney 2006] • Movement in Australia of workforce to the west and north – mining boom increasing. • Technology driven workplaces – shifting from home, car, airports, anywhere. • Decrease - western economies and an increase in eastern economies. • New millennium babies – new skills, adaptable, portable, global citizens, multi lingual, their careers not even invented yet.
