  3. Uniting China • Standards on weights, measures and currency. • Built roads across the empire • Controlled knowledge and ideas by banning all books except legalist works.

  4. The Great Wall • Used force labor • To keep out invaders (seldom worked) • 1,500 miles from east to west • South of the wall lived the “civilized” farming people and to the north lived the “barbarians”

  5. Soldiers of the Qin • Harsh policies sparked anger and unrest. • When he died, revolts broke out • Liu Bang (Lyoh bong) a peasant leader, overthrew the Qin and set up the Han dynasty.

  7. Ruled similarly to the Qin. • Incorporated Confucian ideals • Main goal: to unify China - eventually the empire spread into the areas of Korea and Vietnam.

  8. Achievements of the Han • Improved calendar • Recorded the direction of earthquakes. • Medical colleges flourished and taught acupuncture

  9. Invaders helped to destroy the Hun dynasty and over the next 300 years China would experience disunity.
