  2. Sentence vs. Fragment A sentence is a group of words that does express a complete thought because it contains a subject and predicate. A fragment is a group of words that does not express a complete thought because it is missing a subject or predicate. • Complete Sentence= subject + predicate (main noun + main verb) • To fix a fragment- add the missing subject or predicate 1) The Union Redskins will win the state championship. (sentence) How is this a sentence? 2) Runs faster on the field than other players. (fragment) How is this a fragment? What is missing? 3)The football players on the winning team. (fragment) How is this a fragment? What is missing? 4) Within the school yard and throughout the building. (fragment) How is this a fragment? What is missing?

  3. Practice Directions: (1)Write down the following. (2)State whether the group of words is a complete sentence or a fragment. (3)Next. prove your answer . If it is a complete sentence, then underline the main subject and verb. If it is a fragment, state what is missing to make it incorrect. • Huge trucks along the nations highways in every direction. • My sister responded to our grandmother’s important question. 3. Controlled the ball through most of the basketball game. 4. Sixteen kids who arrived at the birthday party on Saturday afternoon. 5. Listen to the guest speaker. 6. The ferocious storm that is from the west is moving to our community. 7. Looking behind the shelves for the missing document. 8. Inside the room and under the little girl’s bed.
