Gas Exchange • Flow between oxygen and carbon dioxide • Cellular respiration • Cells need to be close to a damp environment • Small organisms vs. large organisms • Large organisms have evolved structures to shield gas exchange areas
But what about plants? • Gas exchange occurs at many different places on the plant. • Cellular respiration occurs alongside photosynthesis • Gas exchange • Roots • Stems • Leaves (stomata)
Animals? • Transport system • Animal’s location
Segmented Worm Respiration • Moist habitat • Mucus -> blood
Bony Fish • Exchange area is located close to water, however is not spread over the entire body • Gills • Water enters the mouth • Water passes over the gills (lamellae) • Capillaries inside (large SA)
Respiration in Insects • Dry air drawn inside insects to what? • Spiracles • Tracheae -> tracheoles (large number of these)
Blood (hemolymph does not transport gases). It is responsible for transport of nurtients and waste materials.
Homework • Finish reading chapter 22 (p. 623-632 : 1-4)
