  1. What to Expect • ASK - Before you enter the room talk to the nurse ( can be done on phone before hand to give you more time to think also ). • You should find out how long ago the baby was born and when it passed. • Ask why the baby passed if they know? • Ask what type of condition the baby is in ( don't worry its a common question in the medical world don't be afraid to ask) • Sometimes the baby will still be alive but will be under the gestation limit of revival ( under 23 wks) babies can still live for a few hrs. • Ask how the parents are - this will also help you

  2. Baby born @ 25 wks with genetic disorder incompatible with life ( most likely trisomy 13 or 18 ) He was perfectly formed 1 hr old and very fragile

  3. Born @ 22 wks alive ( but passed in this image) his condition was very good – sudden labor no reason at time for early birth.

  4. Typical shots from a Still Born session

  5. Some tips during the session • Introduce your self first of all ! • Tell the parents what you are going to do – that you are going to be holding and moving their baby • Ask them if there are any photos they really want • Encourage them to have a photo with the baby • Treat the baby with respect – I talk to the baby and parents • The baby will be very fragile so try to limit your handling the last thing you want it to have the baby’s skin rip! • Hand shots are good for dad to do – with baby in dads hands • I get mum to hold baby’s fingers – her connection with baby • Dolls clothes are good for prem babies and blankets – keep it soft and simple • Sometimes the parents cant bring themselves to hold or look at baby – that’s ok take baby into another part of room and photograph them • Use the lights above and shoot in Raw • There is usually a spot light – use that too • Clean up after you have finished and put everything back – you can wrap baby and place him/ her in the crib if mum has had enough. • Baby can be still warm – esp if parents have being holding them. • 12 images is enough !

  6. ICU babies on Vents If you have established a relationship with the neonate unit at your hospital you will be asked to photograph babies that are about to pass they will be very sick kids on vents and drips – don’t be put off. If the baby is going to pass for sure usually they will let Mum and Dad hold them as long as they want but if its questionable but they are very sick and high risk most of the time they will not be allowed to hold baby – or only once a wk – try and time the shoot around that. Mum will usually be good with tubes and such – but don’t be afraid to touch baby and talk to them. Ask the nurse before you move anything Remember this is usually the last ( and first ) chance they have to capture their baby alive try and connect them to their parents – with touch – so they remember the love they feel.

  7. Some things to remember • Wash your hands before you enter unit and before you go to the cubicle • Flash is useless in ICU – will set off all the taps first of all • Use fluro over lights and shoot in Raw • Sometimes you can arrange for baby to go outside into gardens for shoot • Not all babies will be new most will be around the 100 day mark • Don’t bring in any props – camera only ( infection control) • Photograph little hands and feet , lips and eyes • Babies around 100 days old will not look normal – they will be all swollen from the steroids • Again 12 or so images are good – there is not much variety you can offer.
