Geometry Vocabulary Review Norton 4th Grade
Point • Names an exact location in space B
Line Segment • Part of a line with endpoints C D
End point • The points at either end of a line segment C D
Line • a straight path that continues in both directions with no end X Y
Ray • Part of a line with one end point and continues in the other direction with no end R Q
Plane • A flat surface that continues with out end in all directions
Dimension • A measurement along a straight line of a length, height, or width of a figure
One dimensional • A measure with only one direction such as length
Two dimensional • A measure with 2 dimensions, such as, height and width
Angle • Two lines or rays that share an endpoint
vertex • The shared endpoint of two lines or rays
degree • The unit used to measure angles 90 degrees
Acute angle • An angle less than 90 degrees
Right angle • A 90 degree angle
Obtuse angle • An angle more than 90 degrees
Intersecting lines • Lines that cross each other
Parallel lines • Lines that never intersect and are the same distance apart
Perpendicular lines • Lines that intersect at 90 degree angles
dimension • A measurement along the straight line of a length, height or width of a figure
One dimensional • A measure with only one direction such as length
Two dimensional • A measure with 2 dimensions, such as, height and width
Three dimensional • A measure with three dimensions, such as, height, width, and length
clockwise Moving in a circular path to the right – like the hands on a clock
Counterclockwise • Moving in a circular path to the left – opposite from a clock
diagonal • A line that has a slope or angle
horizontal • A flat line like the horizon, which is left to right
Line of symmetry • A line that divides a figure in half so that the 2 halves can be folded on top of each other
reflection • the movement of a figure to a new position by flipping the figure over
rotation • The movement of a figure by rotating the figure around a point
transformation • any movement of a figure (could be a translation, rotation or reflection)
translation • Moves a figure to a new position by sliding it
symmetry • Any shape that has symmetry has at least one line of symmetry
vertical • A line that goes straight up and down
face • Flat side of a figure
edge • Where two faces meet on a 3-D figure
Vertex (vertices) • Where three or more edges meet on a 3-D figure
