  3. Internet Statistics • Consistent statistics are hard to find • We are looking at trends rather than specific data • 90% of all new domain registrations over the last 2 years have been commercial • The fastest growing part of the Internet is the hypermedia-based Web

  4. Some general statistics • April 1997 1 million Web sites, 2 years later there were over 5 million, the trend continues • Intel claim 40% of revenues from on-line • Del currently earns 25% of its revenues from the Web • Web offers a cheap and easily accessible ‘classified section’

  5. Reasons for E-commerce • Improved communications • New marketing medium • Reduction in letters, phone calls, fax • Allows for on-line sales and product interrogation • Ability to develop and expand new services • Speedier services

  6. Issues • Security concerns • Lack of knowledge • Reliability of integrated applications • Lack of standards • Loss of interactivity • Cost • Potential for sabotage

  7. Who’s on the Bandwagon? • Airlines • Banks • Media & Publishing • Retail • Financial trading

  8. Summary • E-commerce has been an idealised concept for many years • Hampered by lack of integrated applications combined with bandwidth/access problems • Infrastructure of the Internet provides the potential for future growth.
