  3. What is Peer Pressure? Peer pressure is influencing someone’s actions or decisions, either positively or negatively.

  4. Two Types of Peer Pressure POSITIVE & NEGATIVE

  5. What is Positive Peer Pressure? Positive peer pressure is pressure (or influence) from someone to have you do something that will positively influence someone, something, or a decision in your life.

  6. Types of Positive Peer Pressure Healthy eating and exercise habits *Encouraging your friends to make healthier eating habits and engaging in exercise can make your life and theirs better.

  7. Types of Positive Peer Pressure (Cont’d) Doing School Work *Peer pressuring your friends to complete homework assignments, class work and projects can make them better students. Also, giving into positive peer pressure from your friends to do well in school and benefit you in the long run (ex: getting better grades & going to college).

  8. Types of Positive Peer Pressure (Cont’d) Respecting Others *Giving and receiving respect from others can make you a better person. By positively peer pressuring others to show respect and make everyone get along.

  9. Reasons to say “YES” TO Positive Peer Pressure It can benefit you in a certain way (example: get better grades, help someone who needs it, etc.) Set a good example for others to do the right thing.

  11. What is Negative Peer Pressure? Negative peer pressure is when someone tries to get you to act or do something that you normally wouldn’t do (or don’t feel comfortable doing).

  12. Types of Negative Peer Pressure Drugs and Alcohol *Drugs and alcohol are bad in many ways. They can shorten your life and make your proper judgment impaired.

  13. Types of Negative Peer Pressure (Cont’d) Bullying *Bullying can be classified as teasing, name calling and physical behavior (ex: pushing and hitting). Bullying can lead to emotional and physical problems.

  14. Types of Negative Peer Pressure (Cont’d) Cheating * Cheating on homework, class work, or an exam can get you into big trouble. Don’t give in to anyone asking you for answers when you know the work has to be done individually.

  15. Ways to say “NO” to negative Peer Pressure #1. Just Say NO! When someone is trying to get you to do something that you don’t want to simply look them in the eye and say “no” and walk away. NO!

  16. Ways to say “NO” to negative Peer Pressure (Cont’d) #2. Give a reason why the peer pressure situation is bad. Example: Someone is trying to get you to smoke a cigarette and you don’t want to. Say, “No, thanks cigarettes are bad for you and can cause many health problems.” and walk away from the situation.

  17. Ways to say “NO” to negative Peer Pressure (Cont’d) #3. Change the subject. Example: Someone is trying to get you to consume alcohol at a party and you don’t want to. Your response to the person trying to get you to drink could be, “I think “Sarah” (your friends name) is calling me, I’ll be right back.” Don’t go back to the situation.

  19. Remember.. You are the boss of yourself. You don’t have to do anything anyone says if you feel uncomfortable. If you don’t feel safe, tell a parent, teacher, friend, or someone who could help!
