  2. Introduction To all in the land of Spitler’s Reading: The King has royally declared thy duty to find out everything thou canst about one noble theme found in thy novel Freak the Mighty. You must have stout hearts and a firm resolves to seek out all that is known on thy topic. Magnificently complete the challenging Tasks of the Quest, and The Golden “A” could be thine!

  3. Your Mighty Task • You will find yourself facing 5 total activities to expand your knowledge of a particular theme , Bullying, in Freak the Mighty . See rubric attached that will be used to evaluate each paragraph written. • Final task- the great presentation of knowledge. You will be responsible for educating your fellow classmates on the main facts and details of your theme and how it connects to the novel. See rubric attached to know how your presentation will be evaluated. • You will need to build upon each activity as you move through.

  4. Resources for Thy Quest • Materials Needed: • Pencils, works cited packet • computer with internet access • flash drive • markers/colored pencils (Arthurian group) • Schoology.com username and password

Process to Thy Golden “A”- Activity 1: KnowledgeSubmit in Activity 1 Dropbox in Schoology.com Bullying: (click for list of links to help) • Recall main ideas in a well-developed paragraph about what bullying is, why kids bully others, and signs that you may be a bully or be a victim of bullying. • (This should be at least 200 words and sources are cited. See Assessment Page) • Go to voicethread.com

Process to Thy Golden “A”- Activity 2: ComprehensionSubmit in Activity 2 Dropbox in Schoology.com • Bullying: (click for list of links to help) • Freak and Max had to deal with bullies their whole lives, but not everybody is good at handling bullies. Differentiate the consequences of bullying for the bully in one paragraph and the consequences of bullying on the victim in a second paragraph.

Process to Thy Golden “A”- Activity 3: ApplicationComplete ONLY your topicSubmit in Activity 3 Discussion Board in Schoology.com • Bullying: (click for list of links to help) • Bullying is a major issue that dealt with by the main characters in this novel. In a well-supported paragraph, determine your definition of what bullying is. Also, discover four examples of bullying from the novel and include at least four ways that Max and Kevin dealt with bullying. • Post your paragraph on Activity 3 Discussion on Schoology. • Comment on at least 2 other classmate’s posts that is at least 100 characters in length.

Process to Thy Golden “A”- Activity 4: AnalysisSubmit in Activity 4 Dropbox in Schoology.com • Bullying: (click for list of links to help) • Now that you have researched bullying, pretend that you are a Guidance Counselor and breakdown what a student can do if he/she is bullied or witness bullying. • Include and order the top 10 things you think a student can do to stop bullying at our school. • Take at least 5 pictures with our class digital camera that demonstrates the different types of bullying and/or how to deal with bullying. Include a caption explaining your photograph. Include this all in your document. • Make sure you fill out a form to check out the camera from the classroom!

Process to Thy Golden “A”- Activity 5 : SynthesisSubmit in Activity 5 Dropbox in Schoology.com • Bullying: (click for list of links to help) • You need to compile all the activities completed in this quest, and create a presentation to express what you all have learned about your topic and it’s application to the novel. • You will complete this with a group that has been assigned to you. Process to Thy Golden “A”- Activity 6: Evaluation Submit in Activity 6 Dropbox in Schoology.com Bullying: (click for list of links to help) • Make a rubric to assess yourself and your classmate’s presentations on his/her research on bullying. • What changes would you make to your research and/or presentation? • What would you recommend to your peers on their research and/or presentation?

Evaluation of Thy Efforts • Rubric for each paragraph written. • Remember you need to have topic sentences, supporting details, specific examples from story if needed, and well developed thought. • Rubric for Presentation Activity • You will be graded not only on content but how well each presenter speaks and acts during the presentation. • Rubric for Group Member Participation • You will be evaluating your own efforts throughout the project as well as giving your group mates a score on their efforts. You will need to explain why grade was given. Your grade will be the average.

  12. Conclusion • Congratulations on thoust safe return from the mighty quest! Thou have brought great honor and knowledge to thy kingdom of Reading. The Golden “A” is now in thine’s grasp. Understanding may now be achieved and thoust novel has become more than just words. Spread the word of thoust new knowledge and continue life’s long quest of obtaining more.

Teacher Notes • Must have pre-read Freak the Mighty • Have an understanding of each of the topics researched in this quest. • Students should have read at least half the book, if not the entire novel before starting this project. • Teachers may want to have discussed how to cite sources, such as using Easybib.com, for each writing activity.
